The image of the letter Z has now become a chilling symbol of the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
First thought to be a pragmatic emblem for Putin's military tactics the letter has since appeared on social media as well on the chest of a Russia athlete during the Winter Paralympics.
The symbol was first seen smeared on the sides of tanks as they made their way into Ukrainian territory with other letters including V, A, X and O appearing alongside.
The lettering was initially thought to have two important roles.
The first was to mark out Russian equipment in order to allow easy identification when mixing with very similar Ukrainian vehicles.
The markings were also thought to indicate where that equipment was destined for or where it originated from, reports The Mirror.
Now though questions hang over this theory - after almost two weeks of full-scale wa r in mainland Europe, the lettering has changed its meaning into something far more symbolic.
Some are even comparing the use of the letter Z to the Nazi swastika symbol.
Olga Rudenko, of the Kyiv Independent news website, tweeted: "Russians have chosen the letter Z as the symbol for their invasion of Ukraine… I don't understand why they didn't go for the full swastika."
The lettering has appeared on cars, clothing and signs and in images made by Russian troops in an eerily similar way to how the Nazi's adapted the swastika between 1920 and 1945.
As mentioned, the letter Z does not appear in the language used in Russia. The Russian Defence Ministry has not confirmed what the symbols mean either, the Guardian says.
However, some pro-Kremlin military commentators are reported to have speculated the symbol Z stands for Volodymyr Zelensky and the V for Vladimir Putin.
