The only daughter of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley is thought to have died following complications from weight loss surgery. The singer-songwriter sadly passed away in January at the age of 54.
She is said to have undergone a procedure known as bariatric surgery several years prior. According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's report, her cause of death was related to the medical procedure.
The reports reveal her death as being caused by a small bowel obstruction, stating that the exact condition is 'sequelae of small bowel obstruction'. On the day of her death, it was reported that Lisa Marie complained of pains in her stomach.
Paramedics performed CPR on her at her home in Calabasas after she suffered a cardiac arrest, before being rushed to hospital, on January 12. The coroner's report states: "The obstruction was in the form of a strangulated small bowel caused by adhesions that developed after bariatric surgery years ago."
In the report, which was obtained by Sky News, the examiner added: "This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery." Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries are known collectively as bariatric surgery. Such procedures are sometimes used as a treatment for people who are very obese.
According to the NHS, it can lead to significant weight loss and help improve many obesity-related conditions. These include heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes.
Bariatric surgery isn't for everyone who is severely overweight. People may need to meet certain medical guidelines to qualify for weight-loss surgery.
