It feels like every time we open TikTok at the moment, every other video features one of two filters. One shows you exactly where to place your contour, the other is how to create the perfect brow shape to frame your features.
Seeing as contouring isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, we’re here to talk about the latter. The filter in question, aptly named “Eyebrows” in the app, maps out seven dotted lines on users’ faces that show where the start, arch and end of each brow should sit, as well as a line marking the middle of the face. The theory is similar to the technique made famous by brow technician to the stars Anastasia Soare, founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills, that she named the “Golden Ratio”, which uses the mathematical ratio of thirds to shape brows according to a person’s bone structure. At the time of writing, more than 12 thousand videos have been made using the filter, which often sees TikTokers then filling in their brows according to the visual guide.
In one clip that has racked up more than 800,000 views, creator Ling Tang actually committed to shaving the very ends of her brows off before styling them – and many viewers flocked to the comments’ section of the post to praise the filter. “I did it and honestly I question… why didn’t I do it sooner!” one fellow TikToker commented, as another chimed in with, “I’m kinda afraid [of] trusting this filter but it looks good on you!” Meanwhile a third viewer added, “That gave you an instant face lift it looks so goooooood”.

We’re always searching for new ways to improve our makeup skills, especially when it comes to creating a natural, fresh-faced look.Thankfully TikTok has come to the rescue once again, with a game-changing hack that claims to do just that. Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes claims it’s all about the order in which you apply your makeup products. Instead of applying your foundation first, followed by your blusher, Katie suggests doing it in reverse – and the results are surprisingly effective.
Katcy Stephan If you’re on TikTok, chances are you’ve heard a remix by London-based duo Altégo — in just one year, they’ve racked up 1.4 million followers, 4 billion plays of their sounds on the app and scored a Top 40 hit. In their videos, 23-year-old twin brothers Michael and Lucas Fernandes-Pense energetically mash up two popular songs, providing the soundtracks to many a TikTok thirst trap (you may even notice several of their sounds on Variety’s own TikTok profile). Their secret sauce may be their strong relationship with their devoted followers, as they take daily requests for what their next medley should be — leading to everything from a sexy mix of Jennifer Lopez and Drake songs to an off-the-wall (but shockingly catchy) combination of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Disney’s “Encanto” and Doja Cat’s “Woman.” They rose to prominence on TikTok in May 2021 with a popular mashup of Lil Nas X’s “Montero” and Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina.” “It was the first time we started seeing loads of people using our sounds,” Michael tells Variety of the video, which has over 500,000 views. turn this up and break ur headphones IDC it SLAPS #mashup #fyp #montero #lilnasx #gasolina #daddyyankee #slippingthroughmyfingers ♬ Gasolina X Montero by Altégo Music – ALTÉGO After months of growing their following, the brothers hit it big in the final days of 2021 by uploading “Toxic Pony,” a remix of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and Ginuwine’s “Pony.” They didn’t expect this to be their biggest hit: “Sometimes you make something like, ‘Well, this could be like a big sound,’” Michael says.

There’s no doubt that certain makeup techniques – such as winged liner or intricate eyeshadow looks – are tricky to master, despite the number of best eyeliners and TikTok tricks promising easy application. But these looks can be even more difficult for those with motor disabilities or visual impairments.
The popular ‘mermaid or fish / donkey or seal’ optical illusion has gone viral on TikTok, Twitter and stumped celebrities like JK Rowling – here’s whyOptical illusions are known to often break the internet and go viral on social media platforms like TikTok and Twitter, with a unique ability to divide opinion and create a conversation online. Popular optical illusions of recent years, such as the blue or gold dress debacle, have moved on slightly from more traditional swirling, kaleidoscopic and geometric patterns that play havoc with our visual perception by overstimulating the brain.
It might be the one product you’d never leave the house without applying, but concealer isn’t exactly the world’s most thrilling makeup item. However that great arbiter of modern taste – TikTok of course – has now deemed it worthy of its very own viral moment, so naturally we needed to know more. The product in question is NYX Professional Makeup Bare With Me Serum Concealer, priced at a very modest £11 here and available in 13 shades. The buzz began with a video from TikTok creator @_rakhstarbeauty, comparing it to MAC’s iconic Pro Longwear Concealer, which has since hit nearly 430k views and over 47k likes.
Ladies first baby, we insist.
I ignore a lot of the beauty hacks born on TikTok because an app that tells me to use lube as a face primer immediately does not fill me with confidence in its other trends. However, during my usual nightly scroll, I did come across a hack that I actually wanted to try: using eyelash glue as an eyebrow gel. I love eyebrow lamination as a treatment but my brows have started to weaken slightly from the chemical treatments, so I’ve had to go cold turkey on it.
