Viggo Mortensen, Guillermo del Toro, Spike Lee & More Speaking At TIFF Industry Conferences

The late William Friedkin’s last project, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, will have its world premiere out of competition at the Venice Film Festival this evening. This afternoon, collaborators on the Showtime/Paramount Global film including producer Annabelle Dunne and editor Darrin Navarro, offered insight into Friedkin’s style of working and what it was like during the shoot. Dunne also spilled more details about Guillermo del Toro’s involvement in the project.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Guillermo Del Toro acted as back-up director for his friend, the late great William Friedkin, during the shoot of Friedkin’s last movie “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” which world premieres on Sunday at the Venice Film Festival. Friedkin, who died on Aug. 7 in Los Angeles at age 87, contractually needed a back up in order for the movie to be made.

She begins her job at the indie studio this week after more than a decade in the public relations industry, including a five year stint at Cinetic Media, where she served as a director of publicity and led campaigns from festival launch to theatrical release and through awards season.

Benicio del Toro is starring in a new Netflix thriller. The actor, known for his work in films of the sort, is playing a detective trying to solve the murder of a young woman. Justin Timberlake plays the woman’s boyfriend and one of the main suspects of the crime.

How to do you solve a murder when everyone is a suspect? A wise detective finds himself with the case of a lifetime in “Reptile,” and the grisly killing is just the beginning as he soon discovers connections to his own life. “Reptile” hails from director Grant Singer — better known for his work on videos for Sam Smith, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Lorde.

TeamDeakins, the podcast run by acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins and James Deakins, his collaborator, a script supervisor, and his wife, is consistently entertaining and listenable. On a recent episode, the Deakins duo had actor Benicio del Toro on the podcast to discuss their work together on “Sicario”—Roger was the DP, del Toro co-starred— and much of the Latin American actor’s impressive career.

Justin Timberlake is taking on his latest dramatic role in, an upcoming crime thriller from writer-director Grant Singer.In the film, a young New England real estate agent is found dead in a grizzly crime scene, leading local law enforcement, led by Benicio Del Toro's Detective Nichols, to speculate on who in her life may have committed the brutal murder — and unravel some secrets in his own life along the way.Nichols is aided in the case by his wife, Judy, played by Alicia Silverstone, on whom the detective tests out his theories on the case — as well as bite mark patterns.«I'll go with the boyfriend,» Nichols says in the trailer, focusing on Timberlake's character as he and his fellow investigators place wagers on who they think committed the murder.«I've got the friend,» Detective Dan Cleary (Ato Essandoh) speculates, referencing a shady-looking pal of the victim, played by Sky Ferreira.«I'll take the weirdo,» says another detective, played by Michael Beasley. Netflix is giving fans a first look at the new thriller Reptile.

Re-releases reliably dot the theatrical calendar and this week have a standout. Oldboy, the 2004 Cannes prize-winner, re-released by Neon on its 20th anniversary restored and remastered, grossed $235k on Wednesday and $150k Thursday — for a total cume $385k on 250 screens heading into the weekend.

Yeo Siew Hua, the Singaporean director whose “A Land Imagined” won the Locarno Film Festival’s top prize in 2018, has cast acclaimed Taiwanese actors Lee Kang-Sheng (“What Time Is It There?”, “Days”) and Wu Chien-Ho (“A Sun”) in his new “Stranger Eyes.” The film, a thriller with domestic surveillance at its core, is currently shooting. It is set to wrap post-production by early 2024 and start a festival run thereafter. International sales are handled by France’s Playtime.

Talking Heads bandmates David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison will make a public appearance together next month in Toronto for the first time since their 2002 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

The group has reunited just once — when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 — and frontman/main songwriter David Byrne has been on the receiving end of a long string of critical comments from former bandmates Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, who say that he deprived them of due credit and other opportunities and was generally unpleasant to work with.

UPDATED, 5:45 AM: Netflix has dropped the first-look teaser for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (official title), its upcoming anime series based on the classic graphic novels and 2010 film starring Michael Cera. Cera reunites with many of the film’s cast including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza and more who lend their voices to the series, which will premiere November 17. The new Netflix show follows Edgar Wright’s 2010 action rom-com “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” which was based on the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley.

TIFF has begun announcing their Conversation With… (ICW) series for this year’s fest with Oscar winner Pedro Almodóvar, Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and Concrete Utopia Korean stars Lee Byung-hun and ParkSeo-jun set to sit down for chats.
