Jazz Tangcay Artisans EditorThe eighth annual Variety Artisans Awards returned to an in-person event at Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theater.Despite COVID protocols, an enthusiastic crowd of movie lovers, local Academy members and students from the nearby University of Santa Barbara came by to see Oscar-nominated artisans share their craft, their process and the films that influenced them.The night began with one on one conversations with each artisan discussing insight into their work.The full panel of honorees included “House of Gucci” hair and make up team Frederic Aspiras and Göran Lundstrom, “Nightmare Alley” production designer Tamara Deverell, “Encanto” composer Germaine Franco, “Dune” cinematographer Greig Fraser, “Encanto” songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, re-recording mixer, Paul Massey, nominated for “No Time to Die,” VFX supervisor Kelly Port, “The Power of the Dog” editor Peter Sciberra and “Dune” costume designers Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan.Watch the conversation highlights below.

David Viramontes Greig Fraser’s first conversations with Matt Reeves began before the director ever signed on to the comic book film. While in post-production on his “Planet of the Apes” movies, Reeves talked to the cinematographer about being approached by Warner Bros. to helm a new film adaptation of the Caped Crusader.

“The Batman” is a bona fide success, with critics and audiences alike raving about director Matt Reeves and star Robert Pattinson’s new vision for the Caped Crusader. But one aspect the fans are specifically praising – which is somewhat atypical for comic book movies – is the cinematography.

It’s good to be Lin-Manuel Miranda. He has three songs on the Disney soundtrack to Encanto, which currently sits at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Album Charts. He’s up for a Best Original Song Oscar for  “Dos Oruguitas,” which reflects his immersion in Colombian culture to capture the vibe. The Academy Award nomination is his second song bid, following his work for the Disney film. “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana.

Chris Willman Music WriterFamously mercurial rocker Van Morrison has not shown the same enthusiasm for Oscar campaigning that many of this year’s other Academy Awards nominees have. He and the equally press-shy Beyonce have done little or no promotion for their respective nominations for best song, or for anything else that involves interviews.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame will celebrate this year’s Oscar-nominated songwriters with an all-star virtual event, A Conversation with 2022 Oscar-Nominated Songwriters for Best Original Song, to be presented on March 3, 2022 at 5 pm Pacific time.

Kristen Stewart and Andrew Garfield were the top acting winners at the 2022 HCA Film Awards and they both gave endearing and expletive-filled speeches!

It was another big night for CODA for the second evening in a row!

Laverne Cox had a bit of a verbal faux pas while hosting the red carpet for the 2022 SAG Awards. Thankfully, she didn’t talk about Bruno but she did slip up when trying to pronounce the hit Disney film Encanto. Instead, she called it “Enchanto” when talking to the film’s composer and Tony Award-winning artist Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Clayton Davis The Latino Entertainment Journalists Association announced its annual nominations where Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” leads the way with 13 nominations, including best picture, director, supporting actor, supporting actress, and adapted screenplay.Lin-Manuel Miranda received the most individual nominations of any person with six: best director for “Tick, Tick … Boom!,” voice or motion capture performance for “Vivo” and a trio of song mentions from the animated film “Encanto” including “Dos Oruguitas,” “Surface Pressure” and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” The LEJA membership also selected Miranda as the recipient of the Latino Activism Award. Past winners of that award include America Ferrera, Eva Longoria, Rosie Perez.
