Mark Schilling Japan CorrespondentJapan’s Tokyo Broadcasting System network is partnering with Naver Webtoon, South Korea’s leading digital comics platform, and Tokyo-based manga production house Shine Partners to launch a new webtoon company. Called Studio TooN and based in South Korea, the joint venture will plan and make webtoons with Japanese and Korean creators for the global market. One of TBS’s aim in launching the company, its first such venture in Korea, is to produce TV dramas, anime and other content from the webtoons. Studio TooN will begin operations in June of this year with Shine Partners president Keita Iwamoto serving as CEO. “When webtoon works are visualized, there is a synergy effect as the number of readers increases,” said Naver Webtoon CEO Kim Junkoo.

EXCLUSIVE: UTA has signed acclaimed director-producer Anthony Hemingway (Genius: Aretha) and his production company Anthony Hemingway Productions for worldwide representation in all areas.
Hemingway is an Emmy, Golden Globe, BAFTA and NAACP Image Award who has also been recognized with the PGA’s David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television. He most recently directed and executive produced ABC’s reboot of LA Law, as well as the True Lies pilot for CBS. He also recently directed and exec produced Genius: Aretha—the third season of National Geographic’s acclaimed anthology series Genius, starring Cynthia Erivo and Courtney B. Vance.
Hemingway broke out as.a director in the mid-to-late 2000s, while helming a pair of episodes for HBO’s iconic series, The Wire. In the years since, he has gone on to direct episodes of such acclaimed series as Battlestar Galactica, Community, The Closer, Fringe, Once Upon a Time, True Blood, Treme, American Horror Story, The Newsroom, Empire, Glee, Orange Is the New Black, American Crime Story, Goliath, Shots Fired, Underground, Shameless, Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G., Power and Power Book II: Ghost, as well as the 20th Century Fox feature, Red Tails.
The multi-hyphenate launched his production company in 2018, signing it to an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV in 2020. Current Anthony Hemingway Productions projects include the adult animated series Unmentionables, created by Danielle Pinnock and Punam Patel, and the live-action Open House, created by Georgia Dolenz and Emmy-winner Steve Koren.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong authorities arrested a Roman Catholic cardinal, a singer and at least two others on Wednesday on suspicion of colluding with foreign forces to endanger China's national security, reports said.Cardinal Joseph Zen, singer-actress Denise Ho, lawyer Margaret Ng and scholar Hui Po-keung were detained by Hong Kong’s National Security Police, the U.K.-based human rights group Hong Kong Watch said.The arrests were apparently related to their roles as trustees of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund, which provided legal aid to people who took part in 2019 pro-democracy protests that were quashed by security forces, the group said. The fund closed in 2021, it said.Scores of pro-democracy activists have been arrested under a sweeping National Security Law imposed on the city by Beijing in 2020 following the demonstrations.
