The 19-year-old American tennis superstar outplayed world #1 Iga Swiatek from Poland in three sets, 7-6(2) 3-6 6-4 during the 2023 Western & Southern Open on Saturday (August 19) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
Coco had lost seven consecutive matches (14 sets) to Iga, 22, before Saturday’s match.
“Overall I knew I was playing better today,” Coco shared after the match. “It came down to the wire. I’m glad to play in front of the American crowd.”
She added, “I saw a quote. ‘Knock me down 9 times, get up 10.’ It’s a Cardi B song. So in this case, knock me down 7 times, get up 8.”
Tomorrow Coco plays her first WTA 1000 Final against Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic) or Aryna Sabalenka.
