The Government has announced some new, major changes to the benefits system and also admitted they're going to affect millions of people. Bosses at the Department for Work and Pensions also acknowledged that it will leave hundreds of thousands of people worse off.
A report by the DWP has revealed it's planning to resume the mass migration of more than 2 million people to Universal Credit from their existing benefits system says Birmingham Live.
The move will mean those who are on things like child tax credit, housing benefit, income support and working tax credit will start to be moved over to the new system starting this month.
You could also be moved over to Universal Credit from one of those 'legacy benefits' if your circumstances change, for example, if you move into a new address or have a baby or move in with your partner.
The whole process is due to start on May 9, 2022, after it was delayed due to the pandemic, with the aim of the department to complete the process by December 2024. The DWP says around 1.4 million (55 per cent) of the 2.6 million remaining legacy benefits claimants would get more money if on Universal Credit instead, 300,000 would see no change in their payments and approximately 900,000 households (35 per cent) would get less.
Two-thirds of those forced over to Universal Credit but getting less will be offered 'transitional protection' to keep their benefits at the previous higher level, though this is only a temporary measure, the DWP says. Their benefits will effectively be frozen every April rather than going up - possibly for years - until they are the same as everyone else on Universal Credit.
