Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an unusual speech to members of Congress, calling for a no-fly zone over the country.
“Is that a lot to ask for— to create a no-fly zone over Ukraine, to save people?” he said. “Is this too much to ask?”
“If this is too much to ask, we offer an alternative,” he added, calling for aircraft to protect the country.
Zelensky got a standing ovation at the end of his speech, when he said in English, “To be the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.”
In his speech, he invoked turning points of American history, including Pearl Harbor and 9/11, in calling for assistance in preventing
“Our country experiences the same every day…every night for three weeks now,” he said.
Zelensky showed a graphic video that showed exploding buildings and other devastation, the result of Russian air power, along with tearful refugees, severely injured victims and a dead baby, to the sound of classical music and the message to “close the skies” over the country.
