Naman Ramachandran The challenges raised by AI and the alarming recent failures of the theatrical distribution system are among the topics that a U.K. parliamentary inquiry will address. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee (CMS) will examine the current challenges faced by the British film and high-end television industry (HETV). Inward investment into film and high-end television (HETV) in the U.K. during 2022 reached a record height of £6.27 billion ($7.72 billion), statistics from the BFI revealed earlier this year. This is the highest ever reported figure and is £1.83 billion higher than for the pre-pandemic year 2019. Some 69% of the £6.27 billion spend was contributed by HETV production with £4.30 billion, with feature film production contributing £1.97 billion.

Congressman Joaquin Castro and Hispanic Caucus Members Call on Public to Nominate Latino Films for National Film Registry

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Congressman Joaquin Castro and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have launched a nationwide call for Latino films to nominate for the National Film Registry. The U.S.’s preeminent archive of films with cultural, historic or aesthetic significance is essential in preserving cinema. Every year, the Librarian of Congress adds 25 new movies to the registry after reviewing titles nominated by the public and conferring with National Film Preservation Board members and Library film curators. As of 2023, there are 24 Latino films on the National Film Registry, less than three percent of the 850 movies in the registry. “Since the earliest days of cinema, Latino actors, writers, directors, and creatives have made extraordinary contributions to American filmmaking,” said Congressman Castro. “As the Library of Congress works to preserve the films that shaped American culture, public nominations will put a spotlight on the Latino-driven films that have sold out theaters and defined generations. As we launch this year’s push for inclusion, I look forward to hearing from folks across America about the Latino films that have made an enduring impact on their lives.”

U.K. Government Crackdown on ‘Rip-Off’ University Degrees May Cause Creative Industries Skills Shortage, Industry Body Warns

Naman Ramachandran The U.K. government’s plans to limit enrolment into so-called “rip-off” university degrees has met with pushback from Creative U.K., the independent network for the country’s creative industries. On Monday, the U.K. government announced plans where the Office for Students will be asked to limit the number of students universities can recruit onto courses that are “failing to deliver good outcomes for students.” “The government wants to make the system fairer for them, but also for taxpayers – who make a huge investment in higher education and are liable for billions of pounds in unrecovered tuition fees if graduate earnings are low,” a U.K. government statement said, which quotes numbers from the Office for Students showing that nearly three in 10 graduates do not progress into highly skilled jobs or further study 15 months after graduating and an Institute for Fiscal Studies estimation that one in five graduates would be better off financially if they hadn’t gone to university.
