Two men were seriously injured during an axe and a baseball bat attack on a busy road.
Emergency crews raced to the junction of Marsh Lane and Stanley Road, in Bootle, at around 8.30pm on Friday, November 17 following reports of a fight between a group of men.
Two men, aged 36 and 52, were arrested on suspicion of assault and rushed to hospital with serious head injuries, reports the Liverpool Echo. Both remain in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
It was reported that one of the men was assaulted with a baseball bat and the other with an axe. One eyewitness at the scene said he witnessed around "six fellas between 30 and 50 stamping on a man" before a "long thin object" was rammed on the man's head. He also said a passing ambulance stopped at the scene.
He described the attack as "brutal". This morning a number of police cordons surrounded a block of flats at the scene. One of the flats had multiple cordons surrounding it and also had a boarded up window.
At the back of the flats, a window was smashed, with glass scattered across the floor.
Riot shields lay discarded on the pavement and a sheet of blue tarpaulin also covered one area of the scene. Forensic cops and detectives were seen making enquiries nearby.
Officers were today carrying out house-to-house and CCTV enquiries in the area as part of the ongoing investigation, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said.
Chief Inspector David Currie said: “This was a serious assault that has left two men in hospital with serious head injuries. Although we have arrested two men, an investigation is ongoing as we seek to establish what has taken place and we are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry including speaking to witnesses and examining CCTV footage.

Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij — a creative team who’ve been together since their first short film in 2007 — tend to work in the bedrooms of their Los Angeles homes. “We live in small houses on the Eastside,” Marling says during a visit to New York, “so we don’t have room for offices or studies.” In the first of many times one of the pair picks up the other’s ideas and runs, Batmanglij jumps in. “It feels like pantomime to have offices with assistants, and the assistant asks you if you want a bottle of water — the performance of it,” he says.
