A Scots council at the centre of a child protection storm has branded "twisted" after claiming primary kids who saw images of a sex act on a school laptop weren't exposed to pornography.
Highland Council has insisted that the Securly filtering software on pupils' Chromebooks is working "as intended" – despite our report that kids were exposed to X-rated images on devices in class. One mum told us that her son, who is under the age of 10, had come home traumatised after seeing graphic sexual images on a page accessed from a non-explicit Google search for "penis enhancement".
In footage seen by the Record, the website touts so-called male enhancement pills alongside graphic images of a woman performing a sex act on a man and obscene pictures of male genitalia. The website is clearly marked "18+" and "not safe for work".
In a reply that incensed the mum, council bosses said the content was "not pornographic but in some cases it could be considered to be unsuitable." It took advice from the Highland Child Protection Committee (HCPC), an independent public protection body, showing it excerpts of the child's search history.
The furious parent, who has asked to be anonymous to protect her son, said: "This is so twisted, I didn’t see it coming. I wasn’t expecting a good result, but what they’ve done here is surprisingly low.
"They know, absolutely, that my son saw pornographic content, a woman performing oral sex, when another child in his class had come across it by accident. My son then tried to look up the words he and his friend had learned, on his own Chromebook.
