A trial of allowing bicycles on board Metrolink trams will take place over six weeks from next month, transport bosses have revealed.
Transport for Greater Manchester will invite 'volunteers' to take different types of bikes on specific tram journeys travelling to different locations at different times of the day. They will be accompanied by staff to ensure passenger safety.
TfGM said the pilot - during off-peak times only - would provide 'insight into the identified risks and issues' of any future policy change. The public will NOT be able to take part in the trial, unless invited.
Currently, Metrolink regulations state cyclists can only take folding bikes on board trams, and only if they are fully folded and covered.

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, committed to trialling dogs - now allowed - and bikes on trams during his campaign to be re-elected in May, 2021. Now details of the bike trial have been confirmed.
A report due to be considered by councillors next week reveals a 'soft trial' was carried out at the Old Trafford Metrolink depot, and says independent consultants were commissioned.
Their study included research into other light rail and similar transport networks in the UK and beyond, and their bike carriage policies. Discussions have also taken place with disability groups, adapted bike users and some cyclists, reveals the report by Danny Vaughan,
