‘Tokyo Vice’ Trailer Unveils Michael Mann’s HBO Max Crime Series, Starring Ansel Elgort

“Tokyo Vice”Thursday, April 7, HBO MaxMichael Mann, the visionary filmmaker behind “Heat” and “The Insider,” returns to television for “Tokyo Vice.” (Yes, Mann was also one of the people behind “Miami Vice.” But there is no connection between the two beyond the title.) Based on the 2009 book of the same name by Jake Adelstein (played in the show by, um, Ansel Elgort), who in 1993 was hired by one of Japan’s largest newspapers to be its first non-Japanese reporter. Adelstein is soon taken under the wing of a veteran vice cop (Ken Watanabe) and exposed to Tokyo’s dangerous underbelly.

Then there’s the long-awaited return of Bill Hader’s “Barry” on April 24 on HBO and HBO Max, as well as Season 3 of “The Black Lady Sketch Show” on April 8.In terms of new originals, “The Wire” and “The Deuce” creator David Simon is back with the new series “We Own This City” on April 25, which chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force.

Wilson Chapman editor“The Staircase,” a new true-crime drama miniseries starring Colin Firth and Toni Collette, will premiere on May 5, HBO Max has announced.The series is based on the true story of Kathleen Peterson, who in 2001 was reported dead by her husband Michael after having fallen down the stairs of their home. Michael was soon charged with her murder, leading to a court case that drew headlines and revealed secrets about the couple’s relationship. The story received renewed interest in 2018, when Netflix released the documentary miniseries “The Staircase,” which covered the case from 2001 to 2017.In HBO Max’s series, Firth portrays Michael, while Collette plays Kathleen.

The true-crime phenomenon—documentaries, movies, documentaries, series, and everything in between—has obviously hit an absolute zenith in recent years. This inexorable truth would explain why HBO Max would bother rehashing the mysterious circumstances of the death of Kathleen Peterson with their new scripted series “The Staircase” from showrunners Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohen (“American Crime Story”)—there’s still so much meat on the bone.

HBO Max announced on Tuesday the renewal of the Sex and the City sequel series And Just Like That... for a second season.

HBO Max Unveils ‘The Thaw’ Trailer

Anna Marie de la Fuente Less than a year since its June 29, 2021 launch in the region, HBO Max Latin America is adding a raft of new original Latin American shows to its programming grid. WarnerMedia’s SVOD service now ranks second in the region, albeit still lagging behind market leader, Netflix.“When we launched more than eight months ago, we promised to launch 100 shows in a year and a half; I think we’re on track to deliver that promise,” said Luis Duran, general manager, HBO Max Latin America, in an exclusive interview with Variety.

HBO Max has been rolling out original series that have really sunk their teeth into audiences and one of their most popular shows, “The Flight Attendant” is coming back for a second season with star Kaley Cuoco reprising the role of Cassie Bowden. The streaming service has announced that episodes for the anticipated original show will begin airing next month and have dropped a teaser trailer (See below) revealing more shocking events are on the way in season two.

“The Wire” wrapped up almost a decade-and-a-half ago, but it’s still one of HBO‘s most beloved shows. A lot of that comes from showrunner David Simon.
