Tim Spector is urging people to consume one 'superfood' to reduced a number health risks - including cancer.
The health and well-being guru says that he doesn't believe in so-called superfoods, but if he did, olive oil would be one of them. Writing in his Instagram caption alongside a video upload he writes: "If I did believe in ‘superfoods’ olive oil would be one of them.
"While many of us were taught to fear fat, research shows that diets rich in extra virgin olive oil are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cancer."
He adds: "Many of these benefits are attributed to the high polyphenol count in extra virgin olive oil. Not only do these polyphenols exert powerful anti-inflammatory effects but they also promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, contributing to good gut health."
In his video, the author of Food for Life: Your Guide to the New Science of Eating Well - a #1 Sunday Times bestseller, stressed: "I often say I don't believe in super foods, but if I did extra virgin olive oil would certainly be one of them."
He adds that it's not just good for your health but you can add it to a number of dishes. He says: "There are few dishes that aren't improved with a drizzle of olive oil for both your health and taste buds". And it's no surprise that it's a cornerstone in the Meddertranian diet, he adds.
