Some TikTok beauty hacks are kinda questionable, while others are downright genius. Lately there have been a few filters doing the rounds on the app that help with makeup application, like the one that maps the perfect brows for your face shape. Another filter that’s proving very popular on the app shows users where to apply their contour for the perfectly sculpted face.
Following dotted lines superimposed diagonally across the face, users apply contour in a blue triangular segment. The “Cheek Contour” filter has been demonstrated by makeup artist Mikayla Nogueira, whose viral video on the method is one of the most-watched with more than 15 million views. So, why does this particular filter work so well? "This placement will lift your face and give you that ‘V’ line shape that chisels your cheekbones," says Saffron Hughes, makeup artist from FalseEyelashes.co.uk. "After you have applied the cream contour, use a beauty sponge and blend up and out.
Remember we are lifting the face, and don’t want to drag the product down which creates that messy, brown splodge on your face, rather than a defined contour that’s brushed up and out." For several users, the filter positions the contour a lot higher than we’re used to – leaving many questioning where to apply their blusher with so little room above the contour. "The filter creates a cream contour application that elongates the face, you don’t want to take away from this when you apply blush,” explains Saffron. “Typically, you would apply the blusher on the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards.
