Election Retrospective: We Must Remain Focused

By Nicky BathI found myself on Larrakia land, Darwin, on election night, initially with a small group of colleagues glued to the TV in a hotel bar and then later with the remaining delegates of the Australian Professional Association for Trans Health (AusPATH)* 2022 conference where we watched Scott Morrison concede. When I think about the post-election landscape, I think about buses.  The blue Liberal bus can now go in for a full service and maybe a respray. The repaint, I hope, will demonstrate reflection on how the Liberal party can be inclusive of LGBTIQ+ people and communities and see us as part of the solution in reducing health and wellbeing disparities, rather than the problem. LGBTIQ+ Health Australia (LHA) was at times welcomed onboard the blue bus, and I am grateful to Greg Hunt, Minister for Health and Aged Care, who demonstrated commitment and understanding of LGBTIQ+ people.

‘Fire Island’ Review: Joel Kim Booster & Andrew Ahn Deliver An Instant Queer Romcom Classic

How do you write a queer romantic comedy? That is, not one where you merely gender flip a lead (“rom-com, but make it gay!”) but actually create a story that interrogates the very foundational tropes of the genre? If you’re Joel Kim Booster, you do so by adapting one of the most beloved Jane Austen novels of all time, the one whose recent big-screen adaptations have earned the likes of Keira Knightley and Renée Zellweger Oscar nominations.

Political adverts return to Spotify for the first time since 2020 US election

Spotify for the first time in over two years, the streaming service has confirmed. In early 2020, Spotify announced that it was pausing all political ad sales in the US ahead of the 2020 presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, saying in a statement that the advertisements were too hard to “validate and review.”Now, as reported by Protocol, Spotify has said that ads of this nature are slowly set to return to the service.“Following our pause of political ads in early 2020, we have spent the past two years strengthening and enhancing our processes, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content,” Spotify said in a statement.“We are now beginning to sell select political advertisements in opted-in third-party podcasts via the Spotify Audience Network in the U.S.”According to Pitchfork, political ads will not play between songs for users on Spotify’s free tier, and that the service will only work with known candidates.“At this point in time, we do not yet have the necessary level of robustness in our process, systems and tools to responsibly validate and review this content,” Spotify said in a statement to Ad Age at the time of removing political ads at the start of 2020.

The LGBTQI Community Is United And Can Influence This Election

By Jackie TurnerThe first few weeks of this marathon election campaign have been gruelling for trans people – particularly trans women and girls – as our lives have once again become the subject of a cooked-up debate. But if candidates think attacking our community is a vote winner, they’re sorely mistaken. The research found that, in both seats, a candidate who expressed views critical of the LGBTIQI people would stand to lose twice as many votes as they’d secure. Conversely, there is overwhelming support for our community, with over 75 percent of people agreeing that trans people deserve the same rights and protections as other Australians, and two in three agreeing that religious schools should not be able to fire someone or expel a student for being transgender. In addition, LGBTIQ+ votes can’t be taken for granted. With over 5,600 LGBTIQI respondents, our community election survey is one of the largest surveys of its kind in Australia.

Joe Rogan: Johnny Depp and Will Smith are ‘a little crazy’ from film roles

Newsweek reported. In the episode, Rogan and guest Tony Hinchcliffe were discussing how genius and madness can seem intertwined in Tinseltown.“To be one of those people, whether it’s Mel Gibson or any of these actor types, to be insanely good in a movie, you’ve got to be a little crazy,” posited Rogan. He was referencing how the controversial Australian superstar is perhaps equally famous for alleged anti-semitic slurs and angry telephone messages as he is for his Oscar-winning films.Hinchcliffe, 37, then cited the infamous Oscars slap as evidence of how Will Smith’s “King Richard” role impacted his psychology, prompting the UFC commentator to respond: “He’s an amazing actor right? He shows emotion in his film, it’s so real.”“The guy’s probably always on the verge of crying, it’s probably a mess,” added Rogan, who also blamed Smith’s mental state on his fraught relationship with wife Jada Pinkett Smith.“I mean, the way his wife smiled after Chris Rock got slapped,” exclaimed the comedian, referencing the notorious “Best Smacktor” incident, in which the Oscar winner slapped Rock over a bald crack about Jada, who has alopecia.“The whole thing was just, oh my god.
