David Baddiel questions Cillian Murphy casting as Jewish physicist Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer. The Jewish comedian and writer suggested in a new interview that he isn’t totally on board with Murphy, an Irish actor who isn’t of Jewish descent, portraying “the father of the atomic bomb”.Tom Conti, who portrays the Jewish theoretical physicist Albert Einstein in the film, isn’t Jewish.“Authenticity casting I think of as an a priori thing that exists,” Baddiel told The Times.“Whatever the rights and wrongs of it, I can promise you that in this business – and I am in this business still – casting directors are now frightened to cast except in line with the minority they are casting. But they are not so worried about Jews.”Baddiel has previously spoken about non-Jewish actors playing Jewish characters in film and TV productions. In an opinion piece published in The Guardian last year, Baddiel discussed Maureen Lipman’s comments that Helen Mirren should not play former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir in the 2023 film Golda because she isn’t Jewish.Baddiel wrote at the time: “Casting a non-minority actor to mimic that identity feels, to the progressive eye, like impersonation, and impersonation may carry with it an element of mockery.”The real-life Oppenheimer was the child of two Jewish immigrants.

X Japan halt Twitter’s rebrand in Japan, as band return with first music in eight years

Elon Musk’s recent Twitter rebrand has been brought to a halt in Japan, following clashes with the trademarked name of hit rock band, X Japan. This month social media users were left surprised after Twitter owner Elon Musk rolled out a surprise rebrand for the platform – renaming it as X and scrapping the original bird logo. Now, the site is simply going by X in the United States, and each location that has a dedicated Twitter page has been updated to ‘X’, followed by the name of the country. However, this is proving to be an issue in Japan, as the brand name has already been trademarked by hit J-rock band, X Japan.Formed by members Toshi and Yoshiki in 1982, the four-piece have recorded together on and off for decades, and remain one of the highest-selling bands in the country.

Michaels told CBS Morning‘s Gayle King, “I think I’m committed to doing the show until its 50th anniversary, which is in three years… I’d like to see that through and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave.”The 50th season of “Saturday Night Live” is coming in the fall of 2024, and during that year the all-powerful Michaels will turn 80 years old. When it wraps up, another US presidential election — when “SNL” reliably gets its best ratings — likely featuring Donald Trump will have just ended.

Could ‘Oppenheimer’ Finally Win Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. Oscars?

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor “Oppenheimer” has burst into the Oscar race. With the earnest and urgent cultural fabric of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the philosophical measure of “The Tree of Life,” writer, director and producer Christopher Nolan’s chronicle of the creation of the most destructive weapon ever used stands as the most ambitious and vital piece of filmmaking of his career. Adapted from the book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, “Oppenheimer” tells the complicated and morally fraught story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer who led the effort to develop the atomic bomb. Nolan and his stellar ensemble of actors have amassed 27 Oscar nominations collectively throughout their careers. One of those who surprisingly hasn’t nabbed one is Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who plays the titular scientist. With dry wit and womanizing charm that effectively makes him the scientific version of Michael Fassbender in “Shame,” Murphy is an effective vehicle to lead the viewer through through reams of scientific terminology. In addition, his tour-de-force performance, which is sure to be in real consideration for best actor, is best displayed when showcasing the emotional toll such a creation can have on a person. Lead actors from competitive best picture players, especially from biopics, have been consistently recognized over the past few decades in Oscar history (see Benedict Cumberbatch for “The Imitation Game” or Christian Bale for “American Hustle”). Murphy could find his time has come after decades of memorable turns in “28 Days Later” (2002) and “Breakfast on Pluto” (2006).

Margot Robbie Told Studios in ‘Barbie’ Pitch Meetings That It Could ‘Make $1 Billion Dollars…Maybe I Was Overselling’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director As a producer of “Barbie,” it was up to Margot Robbie to convince a studio that her vision for the film would lead to financial success. No wonder the Oscar nominee flat out said during pitch meetings that she believed a “Barbie” movie could bring in $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Such success depended on landing writer-director Greta Gerwig, Robbie stressed to execs. “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie said in an interview with Collider. “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?”
