‘There’s no time to wait’ - Mind demands the government bans conversion therapy

Mind is demanding that the government ends all forms of conversion therapy for all members of the LGBT community now. Gemma Byrne, policy and campaigns manager at the mental health charity, said that “there’s no time to wait” to protect people against the psychologically damaging practice.
Appearing on The Out Crowd, a podcast which chronicles what it means to be LGBT today, she said: “The longer we go without a ban, the more people are being subjected to these really awful harmful practices.” There is increased pressure on Rishi Sunak, and his equalities minister Kemi Badenoch, to listen to those demands. A cross-party group of politicians and campaigners, including senior Conservative MPs, have accused the government of a “moral failing” by ongoing delays to a conversion therapy ban.
In a letter to the prime minister, the group wrote: “Not only has the delay damaged the lives of countless vulnerable LGBT victims, it has also emboldened perpetrators to act with impunity. Protecting vulnerable people from abuse should be a primary aim of any democracy.
“We therefore urge you to fulfil your promise and publish the long-awaited legislation immediately. It is time to end these unethical, harmful and ineffective practices that have been condemned by religious leaders and by medical, psychiatric, psychological and healthcare professionals worldwide”.
Whilst it is more commonly known as ‘conversion therapy’, Mind refers to the suppression of a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity as ‘conversion practices’ - because, as Byrne explains, “there’s nothing therapeutic about it - in fact, it’s exactly the opposite”.
