the American artist Alice Neel – suggests the headgear became his signature long ago. It’s the same beret, he tells me. Neel, who described herself as “a collector of souls”, painted her son “many hundreds” of times before her death in 1984.
The experience of sitting for his mother always gave Hartley “a moment of peace”, he says. “You start thinking about all sorts of things: yourself and what you know, reviewing your life. It’s a very reflective time.
When I was younger, it was harder, of course, but we were always happy to do it. ”An exhibition of Neel’s portraits opens at the Victoria Miro Gallery in London this week. There’s Still Another I See considers individuals – lovers, family and friends, many of them artists or writers themselves – whom Neel painted at least twice between the 1930s and 1980s.
A sequence of paired portraits, the show is less a retrospective (for that, you’ll have to wait for a bigger survey of Neel’s work, opening at London’s Barbican gallery in February) than a select gathering. Hartley is included, as is his elder brother Richard, their respective fathers – filmmaker Sam Brody and nightclub musician José Santiago Negrón – and Neel’s mother. Some pairs were painted within a couple of years, others two or three decades apart.
One sees in their paint strokes, variously, the peculiarities of growing old, shifts in relationships, Neel’s style unfolding – and even a changing America. “I want my portraits to be specifically the person and also the zeitgeist,” the artist once said. “The swirl of the era is what you’re in, and what you paint.
