As the cost of living in the UK continues to rise, people up and down the country are doing all they can to help save on costs. And following the energy price cap increase on 1 April, you’re not alone if your energy bill is one area where you’re looking to make a change. But luckily, saving money on bills doesn’t have to be complicated.
In fact, according to experts, looking at how you use your tumble dryer could help you save some extra cash. With summer on the horizon, and with warmer days to come, making the most of the hotter weather and drying clothes outside could save around £40. However, as not everyone is fortunate enough to have a garden or a yard, using a clothes airer is equally as effective – though this should only be done in ventilated rooms to help prevent mould building up.

Speaking of the easy swap, Joanna Flowers, an engineer at British Gas said: “You can save on average £40 a year on your electricity bill by line drying clothes instead of using a tumble dryer during the summer.” And changing how you wash your clothes can help lower costs too. “There are several things you can do to be more energy efficient with the washing machine,” she continued.
One way of being more cost effective is to use lower washing temperatures. By doing so, the electricity company estimates that opting for 30° washing cycles rather than higher temperatures could save £28 per year. “Use the economy settings to save water and energy and drying your clothes outside as much as you can when the weather allows,” Joanna explained.
