But the plans fell through when his wife became pregnant, leaving the couple no choice but to stay in the UK. Now struggling to keep his head above water with rising costs, it’s a regret the 67-year-old lives with every single day.

"At the end of the month, you've either got money to pay for bills or rent,” the 67-year-old said. “That's all we can afford; that's how bad it gets.
“It makes you feel ashamed. I had a heart attack and sepsis and had to finish work early. That’s the reason we’re in this situation.
“Any savings we had, they’ve all gone. I’ve worked all my life and I thought I’d have a better standard of living once I got to 66.
“But it’s a disaster to be honest with you.”
William isn’t the only one finding it tough at the minute. More than 400,000 struggling families in Greater Manchester are set to receive a direct payment of £300 to help ease the cost-of-living crisis this autumn. Households on means-tested benefits will automatically receive £300 between October 31 and November 19, the Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed.
That amounts to more than £2.4 billion in funding provided to families across the UK, and in Greater Manchester, £127 million is being shared out among 423,700 households.
