A new Netflix documentary about freediving has had viewers 'stressed' and many 'in bits'. But people have been quick to recommend The Deepest Breath, which premiered on the streaming giant earlier this week.
The documentary centres on the sport, which is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding until resurfacing rather than the use of breathing apparatus such as scuba gear. It is centred around the tragic love story of Italian freediving champion Alessia Zecchini and her boyfriend and safety diver Stephen Keenan.
After traveling to Dahab, Egypt, to attempt one of the world’s most dangerous dives, she meets adventurer and Irish record-setting freediver Stephen. Sparks fly, and Alessia ends up staying in Dahab with Stephen.

The pair work toward the goal of Zecchini breaking a particularly treacherous world record. Some of the most famous dive sites are considered deadlier than Mount Everest and divers undertake special training to be able to hold their breath for minutes at a time.
Created by filmmaker Laura McGann, The Deepest Breath also gives the audience a stunning view inside the world of freediving itself, with extended scenes shot below the surface that are both awe-inspiring and at the same time terrifying. This is something viewers were quick to comment on.
The way the film tells Alessia and Stephen's tragic story - don't worry, we won't spoil it for you - has also been praised. But many were shaken up by how tense some of the deep water scenes were.
Taking to Twitter, @MemoMdz1 said: "Just watched The Deepest Breath on Netflix and it was the most stressful hour and a half of my life!"
