Detectives have welcomed a decision by appeal court judges to increase the sentence handed to a vile rapist. They said it represents a measure of justice for Steven Evans' four victims
The 'despicable' predator who drugged his victims will now spend at least 30 years behind bars, a minimum term six years more than the term handed to him by a judge last year. Appeal court judges ruled the original sentence 'was simply too low'.
Evans, 33, was locked up in November last year after a jury found him guilty of 37 offences, the majority of them horrific rapes and sex assaults. The monster - who used a substance he called 'magic' to knock out his victims - was convicted of ten counts of rape, six counts of assault by penetration and one sexual assault against one woman, committed in 2015-2016, and five counts of rape, three of assault by penetration, seven sexual assaults and two charges of administering a stupefying substance with intent against a second woman.

He was also convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting a third woman, and of drugging a fourth victim. A judge at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court imposed a total sentence of 32 years. The sentence comprised 24 years in custody followed by eight years on licence.
The solicitor general, however, referred the case to the Court of Appeal, arguing the sentence was unduly lenient. Court of Appeal judges Lord Justice Singh, Mr Justice Goose and Mrs Justice Foster heard the case on Tuesday - at which counsel for the Crown argued for a life sentence.
Evans, formerly of Alton Square in Openshaw, east Manchester, sexually attack three women a total of 25 times and raped two of them a combined 15 times,
