Tyrell Malacia could miss the entirety of the season for Manchester United with a knee problem as manager Erik ten Hag raised possible issues with the club's medical staff.
Malacia reported for pre-season training in July with a knee problem that required an operation and he was scheduled to return in January but suffered a setback that required a second round of surgery.
Fellow left-back Luke Shaw is due to be sidelined until May and Ten Hag exercised the break clause in Sergio Reguilon's season-long loan on January 2 as he had been "assured" Shaw and Malacia would be fit in the new year.
Shaw returned for United in their FA Cup fourth round win at Newport County on January 28 but he came off injured at half-time in the 2-1 win away to Aston Villa on February 11 before hobbling off a week later in the first half of the victory at Luton.
United had five left-backs on their books in the first half of the campaign, with Alvaro Fernandez on loan at Granada and Brandon Williams on loan at Ipswich Town. Fernandez moved to Benfica on loan in January in a deal that could be made permanent if he plays a certain number of games while Williams has not appeared in an Ipswich matchday squad this calendar year.

Fernandez has never played for the United first team while Williams has made one substitute appearance for his parent club since the start of the 2021-22 campaign.
