Royal chefs have confirmed that alongside her tea, the monarch enjoyed a variety of cakes and treats, from scones to chocolate biscuit cake. In addition to these sweet items, The Queen enjoyed tucking into sandwiches, one of which has been a staple on the Royal menu for over 90 years.
The tradition of Afternoon Tea is as quintessentially English as it gets. It is typically enjoyed between 3.30pm and 5pm and is usually served with a selection of sandwiches, scones, and small pastries.
Darren McGrady, a former Royal chef who worked for the Royal Family for 15 years and received his formal training at the Savoy Hotel in London, has given us a glimpse into what life was like working for one of the most famous women in the world by posting several videos on YouTube, reports the Mirror.
He shared some of The Queens favourite afternoon tea treats, including jam pennies.
He disclosed: "The Queen was served jam pennies in the nursery as a little girl, she's had them for afternoon tea ever since."
McGrady went on to explain: "Simple, just bread and jam with a little butter - usually strawberry jam. We'd make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens."
