Great British Bake Off has officially returned to our screens as judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood welcomed a fresh batch of bakers into the tent. With presenters Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas on hand to sprinkle comic relief over the tent, the first week saw the contestants tasked with making 12 mini sandwich cakes for the Signature, a red velvet cake for the Technical and a cake inspired by home for their Showstoppers. Will became the first person to be eliminated from the competition, while Janusz was named Star Baker for the week.
Last year’s series saw Italian baker Giuseppe Dell’Anno crowned the winner after beating off competition from Crystelle Perreira and Will Chirag (aka Chigs) in a nail-biting finale. Previously, Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite won the third series in 2012, while Candice Brown – who later returned for a New Years special – won in 2016. The two winners have been amongst a handful of contestants who’ve spoken out about negative experiences coming from the show, from online trolling to feeling ‘derailed from a steady lifepath.
’Years after winning the Bake Off, John revealed his life was ‘derailed’ by the show after work dried up. After the series aired, the then-23-year-old was offered a six figure deal to write two cookery books and was paid ‘entire salaries worth of income for a job here, a week of work there’. However, the cook admits that when series four of the competition rolled around on TV, introducing a new group of baking stars, the lucrative offers stopped rolling in and it had an effect on his mental health.
