The AO Arena has been the beating heart of Manchester since it first opened way back in 1995, when none other than Oasis were one of the very first bands to play there, just after going (champagne) supernova with their second album.
Since then, the much-loved venue has hosted just about every big act you can think of in music and comedy, as well as sporting events, theatre shows and much, much more. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the North West, never mind Manchester, who hasn’t had some of the best times of their life inside the near 30-year-old arena.
Time doesn’t stand still, however, and neither does the AO Arena, and over the last 18 months the famous venue has had a spectacular rebirth following £50m of renovations, upgrades and improvements.
Speaking to the MEN, general manager Jen Mitchell described the arena’s new look as “the biggest transformation since the building has been open.”
The team has been hard at work improving the whole building, from general admission through to the premium areas, as well as making sure that visiting performers and crews are well looked after with a world-class new back-of-house experience.
The overall capacity of the arena now stands at 23,000, up from 21,000, with the ground floor standing capacity almost doubling to an impressive 6,200.
Come along to a show and you’ll notice the changes everywhere - a new entrance for standing guests, new bars, a new concourse area, and fresh new toilets.
Later this year, the team plans to complete the work by upgrading the upper concourse, extending the rejuvenated arena experience to everyone that comes through the doors.
The arena’s premium areas have also got an exciting new look. The ever-popular AO Electric Lounge and Heineken
