Well, Big Santa has come down, and Christmas in Manchester is officially over. Until next time.
Like many, I’m a bit of a January hater, but perhaps my favourite thing about the month is the wealth of food and drink offers around. In a tough month for the industry, restaurants and bars slash prices to get bums on seats - and it definitely works for me. Half price food? I’ll be there. Two for one cocktails? Don’t need to ask me twice.
But for some, the start of the new year has spelled the end. There has been sad news today as another iconic Northern Quarter venue has closed for good.
Black Dog Ballroom has had its signs and entrance boarded up, and the closure has been confirmed on the venue’s website.
The Church Street bar is locally famous as an NYC-style pool hall and diner located underneath the iconic Afflecks Palace. What comes next for the space remains to be seen. But its closure is a reminder of just how tricky the industry is right now.
It comes after celebrity chef Simon Rimmer’s shock announcement last week that his beloved Greens restaurant in Didsbury would have to close after 33 years after an "impossible" 35% rent increase from their landlords.
And a popular Oldham cafe serving ‘the best scones’ has also closed its doors for good after saying they ‘cannot continue’.
All that in nine days spells a sadly grim forecast for Greater Manchester’s hospitality industry. So now is probably a good time to remind you that you can support your favourite restaurant at bargain prices this January - Jenna Campbell has put a list of offers together here. I know it’s a tough month for everyone, but if you are able to treat yourself, they would very much appreciate your custom.

As the pair reflected on her time on the show, the star seemed to forget himself in the moment. He said: "I always assumed that you picked your own costumes," Simon commented.

The prospect of working with Jessica Chastain under the direction of Michel Franco was enough to pique Peter Sarsgaard’s interest in Memory, but what really sealed the deal was how Franco had written his character, Saul. Since Franco rarely defines the character on the page, Sarsgaard was given the freedom to create a personal portrait of a man just beginning to struggle with a debilitating illness. Here, he explains how was influenced by a family member with early onset dementia, and why he chose to focus on the joy and humor in the character’s life, rather than the disease.
I’m trying to stay optimistic. It takes some effort, as just about everyone seems to think the film business is a mess–strike-thinned schedule, cultural chaos, streaming models in flux. But, hey, the Golden Globes audience was up by half, never mind critical reaction to the show. There are still signs of life out there.
