The man and his dog behind popular south Manchester café that's bringing locals together over coffee and good food

It can sometimes feel like there is a new coffee shop opening in Greater Manchester every day, but one new addition to Withington's high street aims to change the way people think about and drink their cup of Java and eat lunch.
Located in the former Wilderness Records store on Egerton Crescent lies Something More Productive - the brainchild of independent coffee barista Theo Tobias. A quaint and cosy little hub, the café bar has just about enough room to sit around 20 people - but it's already gaining a reputation for good coffee and good food.
Theo says the premise is simple - he wants the café to champion local businesses, with everything made using ingredients sourced from nearby suppliers. The bread is from artisan Didsbury bakers La Chouquette, fruit and vegetables come from Platt Fields Market Garden and Withy Fruit and Veg and the cakes come from Long Boi's Bakehouse in Levenshulme. Even the mugs were made in Manchester by Meg Beamish at Fond Ceramic Studios.

With the help of local suppliers, the menu features a roast squash sandwich served on sourdough bread, with pickled beetroot, whipped feta and sage pesto, an aubergine parm baguette with breaded aubergine, tomato sauce and mozzarella and a cauliflower and Romanesco sourdough sandwich with mustard greens, lemon vinaigrette - all for £6.90 each.
