‘The Lesson’ Trailer: Literary Noir Thriller With Richard E. Grant & Julie Delpy Premieres At Tribeca, Hits Theaters On July 7

Fresh off its world premiere in the Spotlight Category of the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, “The Miracle Club” arrives in theaters next month. The latest project from Irish filmmaker Thaddeus O’Sullivan, the period drama follows three generations of female friends from Dublin who embark on a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France that changes their lives forever.

David Benedict “What was I thinking when I made this deal?” So sings Holly Martins (Sam Underwood) towards the end of the new musical adaptation of “The Third Man.” Indeed. As it turns out, the mystery at the heart of the show is not the expected “Whatever happened to Harry Lime?” – the man of the title – but what possessed a creative team as distinguished as director Trevor Nunn and bookwriter Christopher Hampton to imagine that what Carol Reed’s still-astonishing classic film needed was to be taken offscreen and planted onstage with added songs. The dismaying production provides no answer. The opening is ominous in completely the wrong way. Yes, we’re still in Vienna in 1947 but it feels like a failure to resort to a voice-over to explain necessary information about how, in the wake of the war, the city has been divided up into sectors under the control of warring nations. The storytelling, it’s clear, is going to be bald.

The students of Pacific Coast Academy are back in the first trailer for “Zoey 102,” Paramount+’s sequel film to the Nickelodeon series “Zoey 101.” The original series followed the students at PCA, a distinguished school in Malibu. “Zoey 101” highlighted the female characters as they were the first class to grace the boarding school that used to be an all-boys academy. “Zoey 102” reunites its original characters in the present day, long removed from their adolescent years at PCA. In true revival fashion, Zoey Brooks gets together with the rest of her classmates to attend Quinn and Logan’s wedding, bringing her group of friends back together once more. 

The Smile have shared a new song titled "Bending Hectic." The song was debuted by the band, made up of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood alongside Tom Skinner, at Montreux Jazz Festival last year. However, the track did not appear on the band's live album from that performance and has become a favorite among hardcore fans.

The Coral have shared a new single this week that features actor John Simm – listen to it below.Recently, the band spoke to NME about how Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy and Life On Mars lead actor Simm hooked up with the band for the release of two new albums in 2023.The new song, ‘Drifter’s Prayer’, is the first track to be taken from ‘Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medical Show’, which will be released on September 8. Another album, ‘Sea Of Mirrors’ will also be released on the same day, and is inspired by ’60s Italian spaghetti western films. The first track from that, ‘Wild Bird’, was shared last month. The latest song release features narration from Simm.

Guy Lodge Film Critic Films about fictitious great writers often stumble when it comes to the character’s actual writing: Viewers must suspend disbelief that a lofty literary reputation has been built on the purplest of screenwriter-devised prose. A blackly comic melodrama in which writerly ego, ambition and insecurity do increasingly destructive battle, “The Lesson” gets around that trap by folding questions of authorship into its arch country-house mystery: Who is writing what, and to what extent it matters, are the questions that keep director Alice Troughton and screenwriter Alex MacKeith’s mutual debut feature interesting, even as it slides into occasional, overheated cliché. When the film’s own words don’t quite pass muster, however, a tight, tony ensemble of actors gives them some polish and punch. A big, ripe turn by Richard E. Grant — as a celebrated British novelist looking to emerge from a gloomy hiatus with one more masterwork — represents the chief selling point of this low-key Tribeca premiere, though as his wary potential protégé, it’s Irish up-and-comer Daryl McCormack (fresh off his BAFTA nomination for “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”) who carries the bulk of the film in quieter, wilier style. With a chablis-dry Julie Delpy playing intermediary in their passive-aggressive duel, this U.K.-German co-production is the kind of accessibly upscale fare more frequently served to its target audience in another European language; Bleecker Street will release it Stateside.

Naman Ramachandran Fremantle has unveiled a trailer for documentary feature “On the Line: The Richard Williams Story,” which will have its U.K. premiere at Sheffield DocFest. In the film, which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Festival, the father of Venus Williams and Serena Williams retraces his family’s meteoric journey in his own words. Featuring never-before-seen archive material and new, in-depth, intimate interviews, the film tells the story of one man’s fight against racism, suppression and violence to raise two of the greatest tennis champions in history. Richard Williams takes the audience from his childhood in poverty-stricken Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was raised by his cotton-picking mother, to the tennis courts of Compton. As the film charts the Williams’ ascent to the tennis world stage, Richard provides insights into family life and also shines a light on unconscious bias and repression of Black people.

“Succession” may be over, but there’s another show still on HBO about a wealthy patriarch with three meddlesome children that seems only to be growing in popularity. And this one shows no signs of ending soon.

It all kicks off when drug dealer Fontaine (Boyega), streetwise and booksmart sex worker Yo-Yo (Parris) and her smooth-talking pimp, Slick Charles (Foxx), realize something is wrong when Fontaine reappears after seemingly being gunned down the night before.

This is one freaky mystery.

latest look at the next “big” Netflix original concurrently with the launch of the most recent biggie is pretty par for the course.“They Cloned Tyrone” is the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, who previously wrote or co-wrote films like “Creed II,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and the recently-released (on Peacock) LeBron James biopic “Shooting Stars.” This Black List script, penned by Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier (who also shares credit with Taylor on the two LeBron James-specific titles) looks to have become a peppy caper-ish genre throwback. The trailer lays out the tone and hints at the plot, all set to Rockwell’s 80’s single “Somebody’s Watching Me.” The comic conspiracy tale stars, stars John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Breaking”), Teyonah Parris (“Chi-Raq,” “If Beale Street Could Talk”) and Jamie Foxx (“Project Power,” “Day Job”) as three locals (a hustler, a pimp and a prostitute) who discover a diabolical conspiracy right beneath their feet.

Charna Flam Netflix has released the first official trailer for the satirical conspiracy film “They Cloned Tyrone,” starring Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, Golden Globe winner John Boyega and Teyonah Parris. “They Cloned Tyrone” will premiere on Netflix on July 21. Ahead of its streaming release, the movie will debut at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) on June 14. The film wrapped in April 2021, according to Boyega’s Instagram account. Per the film’s official logline, “A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio (Boyega, Parris and Foxx) onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.”

None of us were privy to the casting process for Alice Troughton’s “The Lesson,” but I sincerely hope, with my entire heart, that they opened a bottle of champagne after locking in Richard E. Grant.

Elizabeth Hurley celebrated turning the big 5-8 by rocking an itsy-bitsy string bikini. Though it doesn’t exactly have the same warm, melancholic charm, Alice Troughton’s elegant literary thriller The Lesson could give star Richard E. Grant the kind of late-career bump that last year’s Living afforded Bill Nighy. An Oscar nom might be a little fanciful at this stage, but a Bafta shot is a no-brainer, with Grant on top form as a mercurial, narcissistic British author. Co-star Julie Delpy might also find new offers coming in, showing a stiletto-sharp new side to herself as his enigmatic wife.
