‘The Invisible Man’

In 2018, director Leigh Whannell met with Universal Pictures executives, thinking that they wanted to talk about another project. Instead, they brought up a surprising idea, to reinvent H.G. Wells’ “The Invisible Man” as a stand-alone thriller targeted to a new generation.

Bad movies are one thing, but there’s a more potent disappointment reserved for ones that coulda been contenders.

Over the years of writing, I have fallen into the role of the resident horror hound. This mainly came about through my coverage of the brilliant FrightFest, but truth be told, I’ve always veered towards the more macabre movies. I’ve watched thousands of scary movies and have developed somewhat of a thickened skin towards them. There is one thing however, that has always creeped me out – the invisible monsters.

It’s been nearly three years since Universal’s The Mummy was positioned to kick off Dark Universe, a shared cinematic universe featuring new versions of the studio’s lineup of classic monsters. The 2017 announcement of the franchise included Johnny Depp playing The Invisible Man, but when Dark Universe went dark, so did those plans.

Unraveling the dusted bandages of H.G. Wells’ classic 1897 science-fiction novel, writer-director Leigh Whannell has refashioned “The Invisible Man” as a bracingly modern #MeToo allegory that, despite its brutal craft, rings hollow.

Finding the next great horror movie within a classic Universal monster? Especially after the quick collapse of the Dark Universe, that wouldn’t have seemed incredibly likely, even just a year or so ago. However, in Blumhouse we trust.

Though perhaps better known as a writer and actor, The Invisible Man marks Leigh Whannell’s third turn as a director. His first foray into life behind the lens came with Insidious: Chapter Three, the third film set in the series that he created and starred in.
