‘The Curse’: Nathan Fielder & Benny Safdie’s Show Becomes First TV Series To Premiere At NYFF, Wows Festival Artistic Director Dennis Lim

With the continuation of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the release schedule of Hollywood-produced series and films remains unpredictable. November at least sees several new releases, from Netflix animated series (two of them, actually) to even more Netflix with the first part of the final season of a long-running mainstay with “The Crown.” Beyond Netflix, it’s notable that of the series highlighted below, four of them are animated series, both original and based on existing titles.

The new limited series Fellow Travelers has premiered it’s first episode and there is quite a bit of intimacy between characters, particularly Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey!

The SAG-AFTRA strike, a wild card throughout the fall festival season, has created a closing stretch of the New York Film Festival unlike many (any?) of its 60 previous editions.

Anna Tingley Up until Thursday night, New York Film Festival had never once featured a TV show on its annual premiere lineup, so when Benny Safdie approached NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim with a new series he created alongside Nathan Fielder, the likelihood that it would get a big-screen premiere was low. But Lim gave it a chance, and after he finished the fifth episode he knew he had to figure out how to make something work.

Yep, that’s cursed, alright. That idea, a hex, a curse, the concept, the phrase, is explored in delightfully weird ways in “The Curse,” easily one of our most anticipated series of the year that’s almost upon us.

Stone and Lanthimos just reunited on “Poor Things,” a Frankenstein-esque black comedy that’s received some of the best reviews of the year. But the ongoing SAG strike has prevented Stone from talking about the movie, which is backed by Searchlight, during stops at Venice or New York film festivals.
