‘The Afterparty’: Will Greenberg & John Gemberling Join Season 2 Of Apple Comedy Series

Anyone who has so much as turned on a television this year can tell you there is too much true crime. The genre has reached a saturation point: the stories are becoming thinner and are being repeated in different forms until they feel threadbare.

EXCLUSIVE: Apple is rounding out the recurring cast for Platonic, its new comedy series from Nick Stoller, Francesca Delbanco and Sony TV. Alisha Wainwright (Palmer), Guy Branum (BROS), Janet Varney (You’re the Worst), Emily Kimball (Daisy Jones and the Six) and newcomer Vinny Thomas have joined the cast in heavily recurring roles opposite leads Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen.

It’s been a couple of years, but Jason Momoa’s “See” was one of the very first original series that arrived on Apple TV+ in its infancy. Now, as the series approaches Season 3, it’s apparently time to call it quits.

Joe Otterson TV ReporterDavid Oyelowo is set to star in a dramedy series that is nearing a pickup order at Apple, Variety has learned exclusively.The show is titled “Government Cheese” and is based on the short film of the same name made by Paul Hunter. Hunter serves as co-creator on the series version with Aeysha Carr (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Carmichael Show”).“Government Cheese” follows Hampton Chambers (Oyelowo), a man recently released from prison who struggles to keep his criminal past at bay and win back his family, all while processing moments of divine intervention that seem to happen with increasing frequency.Hunter and Oyelowo originally brought the short film to MACRO and Apple, which will serve as co-studios on the series.

EXCLUSIVE: Izzy Meikle-Small (Never Let Me Go, Snow White and the Huntsman) and Joey Phillips (Billy Elliot) has joined the cast of Starz‘s for Season 7. The pair will play brother and sister Rachel Hunter and Dr. Denzell Hunter, respectively.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is a woman desperately seeking answers about what really happened to her in the just-released trailer for Apple TV+’s psychological thriller series “Surface.”In the series, Mbatha-Raw plays Sophie, a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss. Per a logline from the streamer, the injury is believed to be the result of a suicide attempt.

It follows a woman who finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways. In investigating their deaths, she must come to terms with her complicated past.Khan executive produces the show via Fierce Baby Productions along with Jennifer Carreras.  John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment also executive produce along with Liz Watts, Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher of Porchlight Films.

Joe Otterson TV ReporterRob Lowe and John Owen Lowe’s Netflix comedy series “Unstable” has added six new cast members, Variety has learned.Sian Clifford, Rachel Marsh, Emma Ferreira and Aaron Branch have all joined the show as series regulars, while Fred Armisen, Tom Allen and JT Parr will appear in recurring guest star roles.“Unstable” was picked up to series at Netflix in April, with the Lowes having created the series along with Victor Fresco. The show follows an introverted son (John Owen Lowe) who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father (Rob Lowe) in order to save him and his successful biotech company from disaster.

Crystal will also executive produce in addition to starring.The series comes from writer Sarah Thorp (“The Bounty Hunter,” “Hawthorne”), who is also an executive producer.

EXCLUSIVE: Emmy nominee Malcolm-Jamal Warner (The Resident), Wendell Pierce (The Wire) and Karen LeBlanc (The Kings of Napa) are set to star in an episode of Accused, Fox’s straight-to-series crime anthology drama, Accused, executive-produced by Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa and David Shore.

EXCLUSIVE: CBS has put in development JumpStart, a multi-camera comedy based on Robb Armstrong’s long-running comic strip. Wayne Conley (The Best Man) will pen the TV adaptation, which hails from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios.

Taron Egerton is going deep undercover as a snitch in maximum security prison to entice a confession out of a suspected serial killer in a bid for his own early release in the trailer for “Black Bird.”The Apple TV+ series, which debuts with two episodes on July 8, finds Egerton playing Jimmy Keene, a decorated policeman’s son (Ray Liotta), who is sentenced to 10 years behind bars. But, with the authorities needing help in solving a series of gruesome murders, and suspect Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) in supermax, Keene is offered the opportunity to go to the prison for the criminally insane, and elicit a confession.Things get hairy for Egerton’s Keene as the trailer shows, as he deals with violence, the mentally ill and solitary confinement.New episodes of the six-episode psychological thriller will drop every Friday though August 5.Author Dennis Lehane developed and wrote the drama, which is inspired by actual events, and is executive producer.The series stars “Rocketman” alum Egerton, Hauser, Greg Kinnear as Brian Miller, Sepideh Moafi as Lauren McCauley and Liotta as Jimmy Keene’s father, Big Jim Keene. “Black Bird” is based on the true crime memoir “In with the Devil: A  Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption” by James Keene and Hillel Levin.Michaël R.
