The Roots, Burna Boy, Doechii, More Light Up Afropunk Festival’s Return to Brooklyn

Emanuel Okusanya After a nearly three-year hiatus, the Afropunk festival returned last weekend to the borough where it was born: Brooklyn, New York’s Commodore Barry Park. The two-day gathering was anchored by its headliners — Philadelphia’s the Roots and Nigerian superstar singer Burna Boy (pictured above) — and featured its usual broad but Afro-centric range of genres: From alternative rap artists like Doechii and Tierra Whack to Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold, there was a sound for nearly everyone, and the event as a whole struck an inspiring balance between social consciousness and joie de vivre. The festival grounds were curated with African and Caribbean food vendors, Black-owned beauty brands, and a plethora of photo installations.

Where to Stream All the Emmy Winners (And Losers) Online

Anna Tingley If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission. The 74th annual Emmy Awards did not disappoint on Monday night, celebrating what felt like a year of particularly refreshing, innovative and polarizing television. Some network linchpins such as HBO’s “Euphoria” and “Succession” both hit fever pitches in their most recent seasons, earning each of them 25 and 16 nominations, respectively. Others broke through the stereotypical Emmys mold with upset wins, such as ABC’s freshman sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” one of the few network shows to be celebrated at an awards show increasingly dominated by streamers. Other winners included HBO’s “White Lotus,” which took home the most awards of the night, Netflix’s “Squid Game,” the first non-English language series to compete in the drama category, and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso,” which took home the win for best comedy. Check out the full list of winners here. If you haven’t had a chance to binge-watch all the Emmy nominees and winners celebrated on Monday night, don’t worry: All the shows are available to stream on a variety of platforms such as Hulu, HBO Max and Showtime. Lil Baby shares new song “Detox”

Less than a month after splitting the bill with Drake on “Staying Alive,” an early August single from last week’s blockbuster DJ Khaled LP God Did, Lil Baby has returned with a new solo cut called “Detox.” The track comes with a video co-directed by the Atlanta rapper himself, with help from Ivan Berrios. The new song finds Lil Baby flowing consistently for two-and-a-half minutes, delivering a money-over-fame message atop a choir-sampling Nick Papz trap beat.

Lil Baby Announces New Album ‘It’s Only Me’ for October Release

EJ Panaligan editor Atlanta rapper Lil Baby has announced his third studio record “It’s Only Me” on his Instagram Friday, sharing the album art along with its October 14 release date.A post shared by @lilbaby “I know it’s been a long time coming but I’m coming harder and harder,” Lil Baby wrote. His last solo studio album was “My Turn,” which dropped in February 2020 and has since been certified quadruple platinum. In 2021, he released “The Voice of the Heroes,” a collaborative 18-track record with Chicago emcee Lil Durk. The album cover features a Mount Rushmore-style depiction of Lil Baby’s different life stages in a similar expressionist painting style that began with “My Turn.” The goats from his 2020 album cover have begun growing horns in the “It’s Only Me” cover, a not-so-subtle indication of where Lil Baby believes his rap career is heading.
