Welp. Meredith Grey has officially left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
On Thursday night’s midseason premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, the medical drama finally said goodbye to its iconic lead Ellen Pompeo… but it wasn’t exactly the emotional or triumphant exit most fans were expecting! Spoilers ahead!
Almost exactly 18 years after fans were first introduced to Meredith, just a young and ambitious intern, in 2005, Grey’s wished the doctor farewell in this week’s episode titled, “I’ll Follow the Sun.” Despite this being the show’s biggest exit yet, the titular character had very little screen time in the episode — and the plot line left much to be desired for most viewers.

The show kicked off after the mother of three’s home caught fire. While the home was still standing, she and her children were forced to live in a hotel for the remainder of their time in Seattle, Washington since the damage was done. With plans to move to Boston so her eldest, Zola, could attend a more prestigious school, Meredith arrives at the hospital for her last day as chief of surgery. She’s immediately confronted by her on-again, off-again love interest Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), who’s pissed she hasn’t discussed her move with him yet, but she doesn’t think she owes him an explanation — despite the fact he literally JUST moved to Seattle to be closer to her! Instead, Meredith complains that during a previous encounter, she told Nick “I love you” and he didn’t say it back. Feeling like the fallout was solely pinned on him, Nick storms out… until they’re forced to go into an emergency surgery together.

Everything Everywhere All at Once swept the 2023 Oscars, snagging seven of the 11 trophies it was nominated for – and it could only win 10 total, as two actresses were up against one another, so it’s a pretty great result for one of the most-talked-about films of the year.Much of the attention last night and today is focused on the history made and the speeches given from actors and The Daniels, but Gay Twitter (and beyond) also found time to fall head over heels in love with Paul Rogers, the man who took home the Best Editing Oscar for his work on the sci-fi giant.Rogers was the favorite to win for his excellent work on the movie, and it was only after he got on stage that countless viewers took to social media to share their shock at his good looks, as well as some pretty thirsty comments. While Rogers now has an amazing editing career ahead of him – he did win an Oscar for his second-ever film – he may also soon embrace his status as a new Hollywood heartthrob.me seeing everything everywhere editor paul rogers for the first time #Oscars pic.twitter.com/gz3GWqTRdX— Emmy Griffiths (@emmyfg) March 13, 2023Paul Rogers if you’re reading this I am free Thursday night & if you would like to hang out & Thursday night is when I am free to hang out so just to let you know I am free to hang out Thursday night so if you want to hang out on Thursday night I am free to hang out

Kate Aurthur editor “Grey’s Anatomy,” which in last week’s episode said goodbye-ish to Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, will say hello to the actor William Martinez in the March 2 episode this week. In a recurring role, Martinez will make his debut as Trey, a character who’s an important figure from Simone’s (Alexis Floyd) past. In last week’s episode, Simone, one of Season 19’s new class of surgical interns, entered into a situationship with Lucas (Niko Terho). Their courtship is complicated, though, by the fact that they’re now both living in Meredith’s old house, along with fellow intern Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) — fixing it up after a fire nearly destroyed it. Trey will be coming along to make that incipient romance even knottier, presumably.

Kate Aurthur editor SPOILER ALERT: This essay contains spoilers from “I’ll Follow the Sun,” the Feb. 23 episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.” From her first episode as Dr. Meredith Grey on March 27, 2005 — when “Grey’s Anatomy” premiered on ABC and became a once-in-a-generation pop-culture sensation — to what’s being billed as a (kind of, sort of) goodbye episode on Feb. 23, 2023, Ellen Pompeo could forge chemistry with anyone. Along with its lexicon-changing writing and intricate yet rowdy plotting by Shonda Rhimes, what’s made “Grey’s Anatomy” a phenomenon was watching Meredith just live her life. She was a character network television never seen before: a brilliant woman whose life had been marred by tragedy (an Alzheimer’s-afflicted mother, an entirely absent father), yet who wasn’t going to let her dark and twisty past get in her way. Meredith had a lot of fun; she saved a lot of lives; she had a lot of sex.
