The Metrolink was thrown into disarray in the city centre this evening (December 9) due to ‘a piece of tarp’ getting wrapped around electrical wiring.
That’s according to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), which also confirmed the incident was isolated to just two city centre stops, albeit popular ones. Trams could not stop at Market Street or Shudehill from roughly 5:30pm this afternoon.
There were also minor delays due to a similar issue in Firswood. Now, a spokesperson for TfGM has apologised for the disruption.
They said: “Due to a piece of tarp becoming wrapped around the overhead lines, there are currently no tram services operating through Market Street and Shudehill. Our engineers are working with the emergency services to safely remove the obstruction and restore services as soon as possible.
“Bury to Altrincham and Manchester Airport services are currently operating via Exchange square, while Bury to Piccadilly services are operating from Bury to Victoria. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused for our customers.”
The incident required firefighters to attend, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added. A spokesperson said: “At around 5.15pm today (Saturday, December 9) three fire engines from Manchester Central, Salford, and Philips Park fire stations attended Market Street, Manchester City Centre, and set up a cordon to assist colleagues from Transport for Greater Manchester with an incident. Crews remain in attendance.”
There is also travel chaos in Greater Manchester tonight with services in and out of Manchester Piccadilly severely affected.
