Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s widow sues Wu-Tang Clan over alleged unpaid royalties

Ol’ Dirty Bastard has sued Wu-Tang Clan, alleging years of unpaid royalties to the late rapper’s estate.ODB, real name Russell Tyrone Jones, was a founding member of the Wu-Tang. He passed away in November 2004 at the age of 35 following an accidental drug overdose.Icelene Jones, ODB’s widow and the sole executor of his estate, has now taken legal action against Wu-Tang Clan, alleging that the late rapper’s estate is owed at least $1million (£737,565) in unpaid royalties (via Variety).Jones alleges in the suit, which was filed in New York Supreme Court yesterday (February 8), that Wu-Tang Clan Productions – which is owned and operated by RZA – did not pay royalties to ODB’s estate between 2011 and July 2021, when it sent a cheque for $130,000 (£95,000).While ODB’s estate also received some payments in 2019 and 2020 from Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., the suit claims that the two combined payments fell well short of what they are owed. The complaint cites a 1992 recording agreement, which states that ODB was to be paid 50 per cent of net earnings from publishing and recording royalties, as well as merchandising and videos. The suit further alleges that ODB’s estate has not been granted detailed accounting statements, despite repeated requests for accountings and payments over the last decade.Jones’ suit alleges breach of contract and is seeking damages of at least $1 million, as well as interest, attorneys’ fees and costs.

Heirs of Jimi Hendrix Experience band members sue Sony Music over alleged copyright infringement

Jimi Hendrix’s former bandmates, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, who allege copyright infringement. As reported by Variety, the lawsuit has been filed in London’s High Court, with Redding and Mitchell’s heirs seeking royalties and claiming they own a stake in the band’s music. This new lawsuit follows a filing made by Sony Music and the Hendrix estate in a Manhattan federal court last month, which states that the estates of Redding and Mitchell do not have the right to sue them for copyright claims. This came after Sony Music received a letter in December from British lawyer, Lawrence Abramson, which noted that the label owed Redding and Mitchell’s estates performance royalties for roughly 3billion streams of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s songs. However, a lawyer for Sony Music and Hendrix’s estate alleged that both Mitchell and Redding signed away any rights to the music in the early 1970s. Abramson argued in response that “none of the parties would have been able to foresee or contemplate” the digital media revenue at the time of signing. The new UK-based lawsuit seeks a declaration of copyright ownership in the musical works, sound recordings and performers rights, and damages as well as an account of profits plus interest on that figure and legal costs.Hendrix died in September 1970.

‘Procession’ Review: Filmmaking is Healing in an Extraordinary Doc on the Trauma of Catholic Church Sexual Abuse

Guy Lodge Film CriticReconstruction in documentary filmmaking is an eternally divisive technique: What some deem vivid and immediate, others find distancing and artificial, cloaking and blurring reality in the language of fiction cinema. Yet what if the reconstructions don’t just feature the documentary’s real-life subjects, but are expressly conceived and realized by them — not recreating reality so much as their lingering, haunted memories thereof? That’s a different proposition entirely, as is “Procession,” a risky, wrenching film in which celebrated docmaker Robert Greene frequently surrenders the directorial reins to his subjects and collaborators: six middle-aged, middle-American men living with the trauma of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic Church priests and clergymen.

Bill Cosby likely to avoid testifying in lawsuit over alleged 1974 Playboy Mansion sexual assault

A judge on Friday in Los Angeles appeared strongly inclined to allow Bill Cosby to invoke his Fifth Amendment privilege and avoid giving a deposition in the lawsuit of a woman who alleges he sexually abused her when she was 15 in the mid-1970s. At a hearing to argue the issue, Superior Court Judge Craig Karlan agreed with Cosby's attorney that the 84-year-old has a reasonable fear of again facing criminal charges for one or more of the many sexual assault allegations that have been publicly aired against him and has a right to avoid saying anything under oath that might lead to such charges. "It does appear he has a reasonable fear of prosecution, and if new information came out, that could cause a prosecutor to change their mind," Karlan said.
