Chris Willman Music WriterSandbox Entertainment president-CEO Jason Owen, one of Nashville’s top management figures, has signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division to produce long-form film, television and digital projects, with the “definitive” June Carter Cash documentary among the first of their collaborations to be announced.The companies say that over a period of years they plan to develop “a library of projects that tell the stories of music, history, and culture set in the South” — very familiar stomping ground for Owen, a leading figure in Nashville’s music industry who currently helps guide the careers of Kacey Musgraves, Dan + Shay, Little Big Town, Faith Hill and Kelsea Ballerini. The June Carter Cash doc will combine interviews with family members with archival footage culled from “unprecedented access to the Cash estate,” much of it, of course, related to her husband Johnny Cash or her lineage before that as part of the 20th century’s first family of country music.

Anna Marie de la Fuente Karla Souza and Dani Rovira, two of the foremost Hispanic actors with comedic chops, have joined the upcoming musical comedy, “Voy a pasarmelo bien” (“I’m Going to Have a Good Time”), produced by Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP), El Estudio and Spanish pop-rock band, Hombres G.Mexico City-born Souza has starred in three of Mexico’s top-grossing pics: “Nosotros Los Nobles,” “Instructions Not Included” and “Que Culpa Tiene el Niño.” Her TV credits include ABC comedy series “Home Economics” and “How to Get Away with Murder.”Spanish actor-comic Rovira made his big screen debut with Spanish blockbuster comedy “Spanish Affair” and has starred in the 2018 SPIP romcom “Miamor Perdido,” among others. The film is inspired by the music of the iconic band Hombres G, which rose to prominence in the ‘80s with their Beatles and British new wave-influenced music. Based in Madrid, Hombres G have published 12 studio albums to date and sold more than 20 million records internationally.

Companies representing the estates of Jimi Hendrix Experience members Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell have requested that legal action filed with the courts in New York by the Hendrix estate and Sony Music be dismissed on jurisdiction grounds. That legal action seeks court confirmation that agreements reached between the Hendrix estate and Mitchell and Redding back in the early 1970s are still in force.The UK-based companies representing the Redding and Mitchell estates have filed their own litigation in the English courts, specifically against Sony Music UK.

Procol Harum frontman Gary Brooker has died, aged 76, while receiving treatment for cancer.A statement on the band’s website reads: “With the deepest regret we must announce the death on 19 Feb 2022 of Gary Brooker MBE, singer, pianist and composer of Procol Harum, and a brightly-shining, irreplaceable light in the music industry. Aged 76, he had been receiving treatment for cancer, but died peacefully at home”.Born in London in 1945, Brooker moved with his family to Southend-On-Sea in Essex while he was still an infant.

Soulja Boy and Lil Yachty, and YouTube personality Jake Paul, are among the defendants in a class action lawsuit over an alleged cryptocurrency “pump and dump” scheme.As reported by ClassAction.org, a lawsuit claims that Soulja, Yachty and Paul, as well as musician Nick Carter and YouTuber Ben Phillips, were recruited by the company SafeMoon to misleadingly promote and sell the cryptocurrency token ‘V1’.It is alleged that the endorsements were intended to artificially inflate the currency’s value, allowing founder and CEO Braden John Karony and other executives to sell their holdings for a profit while numbers were high.The suit says that the so-called ‘pump and dump’ strategy saw the value of the SafeMoon token rise “astronomically” after its creation in March 2021. It claims that the trading volume for SafeMoon tokens shot up a staggering 875 percent within nine days of the celebrity-driven marketing campaign, peaking at $191.6 million on April 22, according to the complaint.Central to the lawsuit is SafeMoon’s promise to create a designated ‘wallet’, in which investors would “have a better place” to hold their tokens.

Jimi Hendrix lyric sheet that was torn in half and given to two fans at a gig 55 years ago has finally been pieced back together.On February 20, 1967, Hendrix played a gig at the Bath Pavilion in the evening in place of Chuck Berry, who had to cancel his performance.As the Guardian report, before the show, two unnamed women, aged 15 and 16, waited at the stage door to get an autograph from Hendrix. With no blank paper to hand, the legendary guitarist then tore out a page from a notebook before tearing it in half and signing each half for both fans.The two women, who wish to remain anonymous, then discovered that lyrics for a song then dubbed “51st Wedding Anniversary” – the eventual track, ’51st Anniversary’, was released weeks after the concert as a ‘Purple Haze’ B-side – were inscribed on the back of their signed pieces of paper.

The estates of Jimi Hendrix’s one-time collaborators have sued Sony Music UK accusing the major – as the licensee of the Hendrix catalogue – of copyright infringement, while also seeking allegedly unpaid royalties.We knew this dispute was brewing, because last month the Hendrix estate and Sony went to court in New York seeking a declaratory judgement that agreements reached in the 1970s with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell – the other two members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience – were still valid and enforceable.Those agreements were negotiated in the years after Hendrix’s death in 1970. In them, Redding and Mitchell basically gave up any copyright or royalty claims in relation to recordings made by the Jimi Hendrix Experience in return for “significant monetary consideration”.

Robin Williams and George Carlin have filed a lawsuit against Pandora, claiming the platform has been “willfully” streaming the late comedians’ recorded routines without proper licensing.According to Rolling Stone, the families of the comics filed the copyright infringement suit on Monday (February 7) alongside related complaints from fellow comedians Andrew Dice Clay, Ron White and Bill Engvall.The estates claim that the works of both comedians “continue to be exploited, performed, broadcast, and streamed” across Pandora’s platforms without the proper permission and without any “substantive response” to warnings issued by literary agency Word Collections over the past couple years.“While Carlin would have been thrilled for his works to live on through valid licenses and payments, he would have seven dirty words to say about Pandora’s actions and willful copyright infringement, no doubt,” Carlin’s paperwork states.Williams’ estate is seeking $4.1million in damages, while Carlin’s is looking for $8.4million.Rolling Stone reports that the filings allege Pandora improperly offered 27 of Williams’ works through its digital broadcast radio service. A judge on Friday in Los Angeles appeared strongly inclined to allow Bill Cosby to invoke his Fifth Amendment privilege and avoid giving a deposition in the lawsuit of a woman who alleges he sexually abused her when she was 15 in the mid-1970s. At a hearing to argue the issue, Superior Court Judge Craig Karlan agreed with Cosby's attorney that the 84-year-old has a reasonable fear of again facing criminal charges for one or more of the many sexual assault allegations that have been publicly aired against him and has a right to avoid saying anything under oath that might lead to such charges. "It does appear he has a reasonable fear of prosecution, and if new information came out, that could cause a prosecutor to change their mind," Karlan said.
