A teacher from Bolton has turned her life around after being told she was ‘weeks from death’ while battling anorexia.
Kelly Louise Appleton, 23, was first diagnosed with the eating disorder at the age of 19 but said the isolation of the lockdown made her illness worse. Only after psychiatrists warned Kelly that her organs would fail was she able to accept support for her illness, even telling her worried mum that she feared she was going to die before her.

Having sought the advice of anorexia charity BEAT, Kelly says she has been able to see things differently and hopes to help others with her story. She says she feels "much better" with herself, and has come up with strategies to help her cope.
Even though she is now classed as “recovered”, she still feels that it is something she has to manage day-by-day.
“I think recovery is something that is ongoing,” Kelly said.
“For some people, it can take months, and for others, it can take years. Things can trigger it, and you kind of come up with strategies.”
Kelly said her illness started during university and she was diagnosed with anorexia at the age of 19. When the UK was locked down in 2020, she was classed as clinically vulnerable due to her low white blood cell count and had to work from home as a primary school teacher.
Kelly said this period of isolation took a huge toll on her mental health – and drastically affected her.
“At that point, nobody knew what was happening with lockdown,” Kelly explained. "I was sent home with the view that I would probably be back in a few weeks, and everything would have died down, but it didn’t."
