“I wanted to bring back those early 2000 romantic comedies,” Sydney Sweeney said Tuesday in her SXSW chat this afternoon about her mission with Anyone But You.
Not only did she star in the movie, but she produced it as well. She’s here at SXSW with her second starring- and produced-by project, Immaculate, world premiering tonight at the Paramount.

“I was working on the script, I hired Will [Gluck] and Glen [Powell],” she said about Anyone But You. “(I wanted the audience to be) left wanting to sing and dance in the rain, and have big romantic gestures. I didn’t want to the rom-com to be something small, I wanted big set pieces.”
“Will amped up the set pieces in the film,” she said. “We wanted to retain an environment on set in which we had so much fun and shared that love and excitement with the audience.”
“I hope to create more projects where you feel that love and energy and the audience can walk away from wanting that as well.”
Asked by the moderator what 2000 romantic comedy she’d like to remake, Sweeney dodged and passed on answering: “Omigod, I’m going to get dragged on social media.”
Sweeney didn’t mention anything about an Anyone But You sequel in her SXSW chat.
“We’re dreaming up a bunch of different ideas,” the actress recently told People about where she is with co-star Powell. “We haven’t really solidified what we want to do yet. But we’re just dreaming up a bunch of different things and seeing what clicks best.”
Made off a production cost of $25 million, Anyone But You has been a profitable movie for Sony, grossing $212 million at the global box office.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Sydney Sweeney said in a recent interview with GQ UK that starring in Sony’s “Madame Web” was a “strategic business decision” that more or less paid off despite the film being one of the year’s most infamous box office flops. In Sweeney’s eyes, “Madame Web” got her in the door at Sony Pictures and that’s where she was able to have a massive box office success with the romantic comedy “Anyone but You.” “To me, that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony,” Sweeney told the publication. “Without doing ‘Madame Web’ I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there.
Daniel D'Addario Chief TV Critic Sydney Sweeney’s had a huge 2024 so far — and her most startling act of the year is still ahead. In the early weeks of the year, her Sony Pictures romantic comedy with Glen Powell, “Anyone But You,” showed remarkable staying power at the box office, eventually building from a tepid early result amid holiday competition to over $200 million at the global box office on the strength of word-of-mouth.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Sydney Sweeney just premiered her latest movie, “Immaculate,” at SXSW, and it marks her third high profile release in four months. She conquered the box office opposite Glen Powell in the hit romantic comedy “Anyone But You” (which has earned more than $200 million worldwide), and then she experienced her first studio flop with the Sony comic book tentpole “Madame Web.” Not that Sweeney is too concerned. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the actor was unfazed when asked about “Madame Web” being widely mocked.
Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Fresh off her recent stint hosting “Saturday Night Live,” Sydney Sweeney made her way to Austin and SXSW for the world premiere of her new religious horror film “Immaculate” — and on Tuesday night, she had the crowd screaming (and laughing at their own reactions) at the Paramount Theatre. The jump scares, in particular, had the entire theater jumping — and then giggling at their own fear. “Immaculate” leans into horror but also has plenty of moments of dark humor.
