A supermarket that was named the cheapest for the same basic items almost two years ago has now been named as the most expensive.
The Manchester Evening News has been tracking the prices of eight basic items from six of the most popular supermarkets for more than two years now as shoppers try to make as many savings as they can.
We’ve been looking at the cost of basic versions of bread, milk, coffee, teabags, butter, baked beans, chicken and mince since March 2022 in light of the cost of living crisis at six supermarkets: Tesco, Lidl, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi and Sainsbury’s.

This week, the cost of the eight staple items from each of the six supermarkets have remained the same as last week’s comparison - meaning that Tesco’s recent 30p price hike of its 300g of chicken remains in tact.
That means that Tesco remains the most expensive this week, with the eight-item shopping basket coming to a total of £12.62 - 29p more than Asda and Sainsbury’s, its closest competitors at £12.33.
As like last week, the cheapest supermarket this week is Lidl with the total remaining the same at £12.11. Just by a couple of pennies more, Aldi’s total is £12.14. Morrisons remains in the middle of the pack at £12.27.
Most interestingly, this week’s list showcases how prices can fluctuate and change. Nearly two years ago, in August 2022, Tesco was actually named as the cheapest supermarket of the lot, with Lidl coming second.
As usual, it’s important to note that Aldi disputes the results of our weekly comparison, saying that it does not take into account like-for-like products or ‘the higher quality’ of its products. Aldi
