AFI FEST 2022 has officially announced its dates and call for entries. The 36th edition will take place in Los Angeles, CA, on November 2-6, 2022.  Entries open today and filmmakers are invited to submit fiction, documentary, experimental and animated short films. Once again placing the fest in the heart of awards season AFI Fest is planning to fully return to its usual place in the run up to Oscars, and seems to be returning to some level of normality if Covid cooperates, although today’s announcement didn’t give details on what the fest will look like or if it will be fully in person or partially virtual once again. It featured the first-hand account of Gene Church, a participant in the Leadership Dynamics Institute, a secretive four-day leadership seminar in 1970 in California that was subject to accusations of physical torture and brainwashing.Joey Izzo created and directed the film and is onboard to develop and direct the series.

Writer-director Jamie Dack has expanded her widely admired 2018 short film Palm Trees and Power Lines into a considerably more thorny and disturbing feature of the same title. Shot verité style on the most banal possible locations, the film, which is making its world premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section of the Sundance Film Festival, takes an unvarnished look at an environment that is arid both literally and figuratively, one in which young people seem to be given precious little guidance or structure by family or society. Dack doesn’t explicitly editorialize but makes acutely clear the vulnerability of adolescents left too much to their own devices at a formative age.

Michael Lee Aday, who is better known by his stage name Meat Loaf, has died. “Our hearts are broken to announce the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight surrounded by his wife Deborah, daughters Pearl and Amanda, and close friends,” a message on the 74-year-old’s Facebook page read. “His amazing career spanned six decades that saw him sell over 100 million albums worldwide and star in 65 movies, including Fight Club, Focus, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Wayne’s World.”
