Summer Olympics Postponed One Year

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a month-long state of emergency Tuesday for Tokyo and six other prefectures to ramp up defenses against the spread of the coronavirus as the number of infections surges. But the move came in the form of a stay-at-home request — not an order — and violators will not be penalized.

The new dates for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo have just been revealed. After getting postponed due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the Games have been rescheduled to open on July 23, 2021 and close on August 8, 2021.

Update 3/30/20: We know now when the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics will take place, after the event was delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, the government of Japan, and affiliated organizations announced that the Summer Games will take place from July 23, 2021, until August 8, 2021. The Paralympic Games will follow from August 24, 2021, until September 5, 2021.

Olympic champion swimmer Ryan Lochte says that while he is disappointed by the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo due to the coronavirus pandemic, it's a "bump in the road" for him and fellow athletes.

"We agreed that a postponement would be the best way to ensure that the athletes are in peak condition when they compete and to guarantee the safety of the spectators," he told reporters, per The Guardian.

The 2020 Summer Olympics, which were originally scheduled to kick off on July 24 in Tokyo, Japan, have been officially postponed one year.

Like so many sporting events before it, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will be delayed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, likely to 2021. International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound told USA Today that the details of the postponement have yet to be worked out, but the Olympic committee will tackle the specifics over the next four weeks.

As concern grows over the worldwide spread of COVID-19, commonly known as coronavirus, many are taking proactive measures to keep themselves safe from the flu-like virus, which can be fatal in the most extreme cases.
