Thania Garcia Sufjan Stevens‘ new record “Javelin” (out today via Asthmatic Kitty) has been widely described as a breakup record for its themes of heartbreak and suffering. On Friday morning, the subject matter became much clearer when Stevens penned and uploaded a dedication of the album to his late “beloved” partner Evan Richardson, who passed away in April.
“This album is dedicated to the light of my life, my beloved partner and best friend Evans Richardson,” Stevens wrote alongside a picture of Richardson flashing a smile. “He was an absolute gem of a person, full of life, love, laughter, curiosity, integrity, and joy.
He was one of those rare and beautiful ones you find only once in a lifetime—precious, impeccable, and absolutely exceptional in every way.” Stevens has kept his private life offline for the majority of his long career, never quite addressing topics of his personal life or sexuality. He really only does so to let the public in on his artistic decisions, as he does with this dedication.
A post shared by Sufjan (@sufjan) “I know relationships can be very difficult sometimes, but it’s always worth it to put in the hard work and care for the ones you love, especially the beautiful ones, who are few and far between,” he continues in the post. “If you happen to find that kind of love, hold it close, hold it tight, savor it, tend to it, and give it everything you’ve got, especially in times of trouble.” Earlier this year, Stevens also shared his Guillain-Barré diagnosis, a neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks a portion of the peripheral nervous system.

Keith Richards has said that The Rolling Stones were prompted to make their new album, ‘Hackney Diamonds’, partly because of drummer Charlie Watts‘ death.Watts passed away from throat cancer in August 2021, at the age of 80. However, he still plays on two songs from the record, ‘Mess It Up’ and ‘Live By The Sword’.Richards has pinpointed that in a new interview as one of the things that compelled him and Mick Jagger to get back into the studio.
The Age of Adz, when he sings, “I would say I love you/but saying it out loud is hard,” and after a pause, concludes, “So I won’t say it at all.”Echoes of that brief and arresting expression of yearning can be found throughout his body of work over the last decade, whether he is grieving an intense personal loss or marveling at the cosmos itself.Although that finely tuned evasiveness around his own desire has long characterized his music, on his latest release Javelin (★★★★☆) he seems ready to say the quiet parts out loud.Stevens’ songwriting has always been lyrical, evocative, and rich in metaphor, so it should be no surprise that he has again delivered a collection of beautifully written songs. What is notable about his writing in Javelin is how intense and personal it is, containing none of the artful detachment of A Beginner’s Mind nor the grandiosity of its predecessor, The Ascension. Instead, he bares his soul with the same open-hearted frankness he brought to 2015’s Carrie and Lowell, his meditation on his complicated grief for his mother.Unlike Carrie and Lowell, it would be difficult to make the case that Javelin is really “about” anything more than Stevens’ need to be seen and understood.
Don’t say the ‘M’ word.
