South of Scotland Enterprise is investigating the possibility of creating a route across the region and the Scottish Borders to link up Scotland’s west and east coasts.
The proposed route, which would be on existing roads, would pass through 11 towns and villages including Kirkcudbright and Dumfries.
A spokesman for South of Scotland Enterprise said: “A feasibility study is currently taking place to look at the potential creation of a long distance coast to coast cycle route from Portpatrick on the west coast to Eyemouth on the east coast.
“The project involves a number of partners including South of Scotland Enterprise, Dumfries and Galloway Council, Scottish Borders Council, Sustrans, VisitScotland and South of Scotland Destination Alliance.
“The development stage of the project is being supported by funding secured by South of Scotland Enterprise as part of the Destination Net Zero Programme, funded through the Scottish Government’s Tourism Recovery Programme.
“This development stage is considering a number of aspects including safety, E-bike infrastructure, assessing the impact of a new cycle route and identifying ways to work with communities and businesses to make the most of a new tourism offer for visitors to our region.
“The development stage is due to be completed later this year and will help decide if the project should be taken forward to its next phase.”
