“The first person I thought of and the first person I talked to several years ago was Keegan-Michael Key because he was a friend, and I thought it would be an interesting way to use him as this erudite actor. And so he was the first one. So that character just seemed natural to me,” Levitan said of getting the cast together. “I had some people in mind as I went through it, but, it’s a funny thing that happens, you know? You have your idea of a character and you start writing it and certain people are dead on.
Rachel Bloom is just dead on to who I thought Hannah should be. And sometimes that’s exactly the way it is. And other times it’s just a little bit different, and you have to start to say, ‘OK, is it too different? Is it just different enough that it’s interesting?’ And then over time … the characters and the actors start to meld a little bit.
You notice little things and you start to write to that. But by and large, everybody is kind of what I expected of them at this point. Johnny, for example, I just thought it … was an interesting idea and a little bit scary because he hadn’t done much of this before.
But he’s so charismatic and charming that I just had a feeling that it would be interesting. And I thought the combination of him and Keegan together would be interesting. So we decided to roll the dice and I feel that has more than paid off.”Filming the comedy has definitely produced many funny moments, including some of which will never make the series.
“Keegan is a brilliant improviser. And we have one scene that – it’s not even in the pilot now, but he did a five minute run. We knew it was completely unusable, but it was so funny we just kept going.

Ethan Shanfeld Steven Levitan is a veteran of the American sitcom, starting his career on long-running multi-cam “Wings,” creating NBC’s “Just Shoot Me!,” and co-parenting “Modern Family,” which won the Emmy for outstanding comedy series five years in a row. On his latest project, however, Levitan looks at the sitcom through a different lens. “Reboot,” on Hulu, follows the cast of fictional early-aughts sitcom “Step Right Up” reuniting when, yes, Hulu decides to reboot it. There’s Reed (Keegan-Michael Key), pretentious capital A actor who never got his big break; Bree (Judy Greer), who returns from a small Nordic country after a royal divorce; Clay (Johnny Knoxville), a filthy stand-up comedian who can’t stay out of trouble; and Zack (Calum Worthy), a child actor who never really grew up. Meanwhile, the veteran comedy writers of the original show clash with the young, politically correct writers also on board, and the original show’s creator is forced to compromise with a new showrunner, whose claim to fame is an indie film called “Cunt Saw.”
Keegan-Michael Key) who unsuccessfully pursued a film career after the show (but nobody appreciated his insights from having attended the Yale School of Drama); Bree Marie Larson (Judy Greer), who has a romantic past with Reed, followed up the sitcom with a stint on a terrible sci-fi show, then left Hollywood to marry the Duke of a small Nordic country; Clay Barber (Johnny Knoxville), who did some stints of stand up comedy after “Step Right Up,” in between getting arrested for disorderly conduct, and Zack (Calum Worthy), the show’s former child star who’s all grown up now and feels the need to prove it by driving a red sports car and telling his fellow cast members that although they’re back together for this show, “It’s different now, because we’ve all had sex.” Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex Girlfriend”) co-stars as Hannah, a writer pitching this reboot who wants to make an edgier version where the sitcom characters “don’t do the right thing anymore”, and Paul Reiser co-stars as Gordon, the original “Step Right Up” creator who wants the reboot to be more traditional. Naturally, this leads to some awkward clashing between Gordon and Hannah, as they have different creative approaches to this reboot project. Shows that attempt to be meta can sometimes get too inside baseball with showbiz references, but “Reboot” is clever and funny, for the most part.
