Seventeen years ago today Australian zookeeper, conservationist, television personality, wildlife educator, and environmentalist Steve Irwin died.
The world-renowned wildlife expert - affectionately known as The Crocodile Hunter - was fatally struck in the heart by a stingray whilst he filmed a segment for his daughter Bindi's wildlife show, "Bindi the Jungle Girl".
The 44-year-old's sudden death sent shockwaves across the world, triggering an outpouring of grief from his dedicated fans and admirers reports the Mirror.
In a shocking response to his death, a series of revenge attacks were carried out against stingrays along the Australian coastline.
These acts of violence were quickly condemned by the executive director of Irwin's conservation organisation.
Despite Steve's repeated encounters with dangerous wildlife including crocodiles, snakes and sharks, the star had a steadfast rule that the cameras should never stop rolling.
This rule led to the animal lover's death near Australia's Great Barrier Reef being captured on film by his crew.
It remains unknown where the footage of his death is.
Tommy Donovan, Steve's IMDb biographer, once revealed: "He tells his camera crew to always be filming. If he needs help he will ask for it. Even if he is eaten by a shark or croc, the main thing he wants is for it to be filmed. If he died he would be sad if no one got it on tape."
In an unfortunate and cruel twist of fate, Steve wasn't supposed to be at sea on that fateful day, September 4, 2006.
Filming for his show "Ocean's Deadliest" had been cancelled due to bad weather.
In a disturbing recollection, John Stainton, director and close friend of the late Steve, recounts the tragic events that unfolded off the coast of Port Douglas.

Thank god for Alexander Payne. The filmmaker is, and always have been, a true humanist. A writer/director more interested in human beings, something that has always been the special effect of his movies. A two-time Oscar winning writer, his latest film, The Holdovers, which had its World Premiere Thursday at the Telluride Film Festival, is one of the rare movies in which he doesn’t also have a writing credit. David Hemingson did the screenplay, but the idea, an inspired one, came from Payne, a real film buff who was always intrigued by Marcel Pagnol’s 1935 French film Merlusse about a group of boarding school students stuck over the holidays with a much-despised teacher. The director thought it had the bones for a new story and developed with Hemingson. Still, set in 1970, it is Payne’s first period film after a celebrated career for movies like Sideways, The Descendants, and many others. He has made some contemporary classics, no doubt, but the warm humanity of a trio of people left alone at Christmas in a snowy boarding school, ranks right up there with his very best. It is funny, sad, witty, poignant, filled with snark and heart and great acting. It also manages to be a film set at the holidays that offers something truly new for the genre, and also delightfully not only evokes the period in which it is set, it also purposely looks like a movie made then.
