Spike Lee addresses his Cannes Palme D’Or gaffe: 'No apologies'

If you’re the studio Neon, you give the film in question, the body horror “Titane,” a plum fall Oscar-worthy release date in the U.S., and you also hew it towards Halloween, given its darker and f*cked up tendencies. Neon has just announced that “Titane,” directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Julia Ducournau (“Raw“), has been given an October 1 release date in the U.S.

NEON has set a theatrical release date for its Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner Titane, the distributor’s second after Bong Joon Ho’s 2019 Parasite which continued on to win a historical Best Picture at the Oscars for a foreign film. Titane will be hitting theaters on Oct. 1. NEON acquired Titane back in September 2019. 

Well, that’s a wrap on the 2021 Cannes Film Festival; 56 reviews and counting (there might be one or two more stragglers to come, but we are basically done). It was a pretty great festival and strong year despite the COVID-19 protocol confusion, those changing rules, and Spike Lee spoiling the Palme d’Or prize early (Spike!!).

Titane, a wild body-horror thriller written and directed by Julia Ducournau, has won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. It makes Ducournau only the second female filmmaker to win the festival's top honour in its 74-year history.

The awards ceremony for the 74th Cannes Film Festival has started where it should have ended, with jury president Spike Lee mistakenly announcing that the serial killer odyssey Titane has won the festival's top honour, the Palme d'Or. If confirmed at the end of the show, it would make French director Julia Ducournau only the second female filmmaker to win the accolade.
