The 55th edition of the Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, the parallel section of the main Cannes Film Festival, has announced its 2024 line-up. Running from May 15 to 23, the Fortnight, or the Quinzaine Des Cinéastes, in French, will debut 21 feature films and ten short films.

Becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023 and crossing the $1 billion mark, it’s hard to argue that “Barbie” wasn’t one of last year’s most significant cultural cinematic landmarks, even if it missed out at the most recent Oscars. Many actors have revealed they were part of the film, only to be cut, Olivia Colman, Saoirse Ronan, and possibly more, but there was another actually in the movie who didn’t really receive her moment.

XYZ Films announced today that actor Joe Cole, known for the BBC gangster series, “Peaky Blinders,” has landed the lead role in the upcoming action thriller “He Bled Neon.” The film’s director is Drew Kirsch, and Grammy-nominated musician Zhu is composing the score in collaboration with Joseph Trapanese (“The Greatest Showman,” “Straight Outta Compton“).

Given its wobbly beginnings, it’s wild to see how far Paramount’s “Sonic The Hedgehog” franchise has come. Based on the popular SEGA video game from the ’90s, the series seemed dead on arrival— or even before arrival.

Zack Snyder has been concurrently exploring two original franchises at Netflix: the zombie genre actioner “Army of The Dead” and the two-parter “Rebel Moon.” The latter is an old “Star Wars” movie pitch the filmmaker made to Lucasfilm—turning Akira Kurosawa’s iconic “Seven Samurai” into a sci-fi fantasy adventure film.

But that’s not all the South Korean filmmaker is cooking up.

Coming on the heels of Baz Luhrman’s decision to re-edit “Australia” into a mini-series for Hulu, taking an already long film and stretching it well beyond its breaking point in “Faraway Downs,” Veena Sud has chosen to do the opposite for the streaming service.

Tom Cruise has finally entered The Criterion Collection. While technically, “Cocktail” has been available on the Criterion Channel in the past (no, really), in announcing its July titles today, Criterion made Cruise’s inclusion with a DVD/Blu-Ray title official today with the addition of 1983’s classic comedy, “Risky Business,” the actor’s breakthrough film.

The Cannes Film Festival is around the corner next month, so all the satellite sidebar festivals that orbit it are preparing their line-ups. The latest is Cannes Critic Week, organized by France’s Film Critics Union, which will run May 15-23.

This July, Marvel Studios’ first and only feature film release of 2024, “Deadpool & Wolverine.” In the latest installment in The Multiverse Saga, Ryan Reynolds’ merc-with-a-mouth, Wade Wilson, is on the cusp of joining Earth-616 (teased in the first trailer), with Deadpool finally getting paired up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in yet another adventure on the big screen. However, director Shawn Levy (“The Adam Project”) cautions that his new sequels are different from the previous two installments during the Fox era of the franchise, which is not so much a solo outing.
